Pizza run anyone? (PIC HEAVY)
Edited on Sat Oct-29-11 10:52 AM by Generic Other
Last night Crooks and Liars readers sent pizza to Occupy Tacoma. We had about 20 pizzas. That was incredibly cool.

I was thinking if Democrats wanted to do outreach to the occupations, this might be a good way to start. It's been raining like crazy at Occupation Park, in Tacoma, Washington with brief sun breaks.

Our community has been very supportive. Including the men and women in blue. We have had a large nightly crowd as the homeless stop for a bowl of soup donated by kindhearted souls in our community. People drop by to leave tents and sleeping bags, tarps and coffee. One night a wedding party dropped off the extra food from their reception. Tacoma is a blue collar town. Our unions have come down to stand with us. Our churches. Other occupations have sent people. Oakland. Seattle. We have left politics out of it. We are all in this thing together.

Here's the pizzeria across the street from our campsite. We are on Pacific Standard time. After 6 is when we start to get cold and hungry. If you are so inclined, lend a hand and tell them where it came from. The pizza people will write that on the box. http://harmonbrewingco.com/brewery_menus.html

If you can't afford to send a pizza, send your good vibes. Those will also keep us warm!

The DUers at Occupy Tacoma send our warmest regards to all!

Here's a few pictures:

2. I discovered a sad fact about Occupy Tacoma in the past few days
Most of the campers are homeless. We have ex-Marines who were in Iraq. We have elderly women. We have a priest who faces prison time for trespassing on military property to protest nukes. We have young people who were in foster care and dumped by the system at 18. We have students with bright degrees and no jobs. We have the hardcore homeless suffering from lack of proper medical care. We have people who have worked as electricians, carpenters, airline personnel, hospice nurses, teachers, longshoremen. We are a cross section of America.

can should get out and occupy. We all are the 99%

32. YES!
We got 18 inches here in Western Mass. Boston saw 10-12" and NY roughly the same... with nasty winds and early rain to boot.

It took my wife and i 2 and a half hours to drive what's normally a half hour commute. We couldn't make it up the hill to park in our driveway, many roads closed, it was a bad, unexpected scene. 40% of folks around here are without power.

16. Good point -- Everyone can spare a blanket or some little thing
It will make you feel a part of your own community in a positive way.

Hard as it is to do, it is time.

Handwarmers are a godsend on cold nights. They are really cheap. And they last 8 hours. In the sporting goods section.

It's getting cold.

Thanks so much for posting this!

20. People are donating like crazy
In our town it's raingear. Garbage pick-up runs. Delivering pallets and plywood. Porta-a-potties. :)

We even have a person working on a solar system using pedal power to generate electricity. We are building a tent city like the Hoovervilles of yesteryear to remind our city fathers that we exist and they cannot gentrify us out of sight much as they try.

Putting up the newly donated tent in the pouring rain.

You didn't think we just planned to stand around in the mud, did you? Not with all the unemployed workers to lend a hand. In two hours we dismantled our leaky old tents, erected this new structure, and filled it with our stuff -- all in the pouring rain. Everyone and everything was soaked to the bone. Then the pizza arrived like manna from heaven!

but there are flashed lights and thumbs up. When we have had issues with the mentally ill, the cops have responded without hesitation. This is a solid working class community. We are the tax base here. The cops know that as well as anyone. Firefighters give us the thumbs up. Transit drivers wave. People in company vans honk.

People shout encouragement.

The only ugliness has been a few teenage boys who yell at us to "get a job" or worse who drove by in a stretch limo after Homecoming and mooned us with their pimply white suburban butts. We sang the South Park song. "We like big butts..."
