I don’t garden for pleasure. I grow food because I’m terrified of being that hungry again.

1. That really brings it home.
NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, should ever have to go through that.

My. God.

Heartbreaking.

I will dig deeper...

10. when my parents died and I was left to regroup after all was said
and done I nearly did too. I remember being frantic. It contributed to my near death experience. I can't tell you how strange it is when you can't think because you haven't eaten anything but a sandwich for days on end.

5. We should never let them forget.
The last ten years it's like this country became insane and nobody wanted to think about the worst that could happen. Now we're here, and all their stupid soundbites that the right-wingers came up with sound as idiotic as "Let them eat cake."

11. Dumpster Diving Is The Trickle-Down Solution To Hunger
If you give more and more food to fat people, they'll eventually throw it away, where it will "trickle down" for the poor people to find. In their local dumpster. It's PERFECT policy!!! See? Trickle-down DOES work!!! And it works for EVERYTHING!!!

15. Professional liars - all of them.
Limbaugh is the worst of the worst. What a piece of shit. He just lies and lies and lies - there's a reason why Al Franken named his book "LIES And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them".

6. Americans need to force a student loan jubilee on the bankster families
who already possess unimaginable wealth yet still insist upon sucking the life out of our youth.

Amen!

7. More options for cheap or free food if you are hungry
Our water bill has gotten so high that many folks can't afford to grow a garden. There is not enough rain in San Diego to grow vegetables without watering them. Our bill's gone through the roof. When we had the drought, the water district asked people to conserve. Then because people did such a good job conserving and using less water, the water district said its' revenues were down--so they raised the rates through the roof!

There are some other alternatives. Check your local farm bureau website to find community gardens, CSAs (community supported agricultural) which are farms that deliver fresh produce, food co-ops, and roadside fruit stands. Some places have produce exchanges (some will give food to people in need), food banks, etc. There are churches that provide food to the hungry, too. Also check barter websites; you may have a service you can swap for food. In our area there is also a day-old bread store. Some 99 cent stores sell food, even fresh produce; no guarantee on quality but it will keep you alive.

A lot of people are going back to raising chickens for eggs; hens are legal in a growing number of cities. If you raise your own eggs, fruits and vegetables, and learn to fish, you can eat fairly well for not much money.

17. Good advice. One can also water/fertilise with their own urine and use the gray water
from washing clothes. There are regulations that need to be followed for the gray water usage.
