The occupy movement is largely about the media, isn't it?
First point:

People aren't satisfied with the media. If it is for good reason that they aren't satisfied, then perhaps we should hope for accurate coverage, but expect the opposite.

Just as "Dog bites man" isn't news, "Misinformation in media coverage of occupy movement" shouldn't be considered newsworthy enough to be the title of a thread on DU.

Second point:

Although the occupy movement is needed to focus media attention on some issues, the occupy movement will ultimately fail if the coverage remains focused primarily on the occupy movement itself.

Ideally, 75% of occupy movement protest signs would say something like this:

"Breaking news: We're protesting about something. Anybody care to know what?"

1. Its what you think its about.
Many people have different reasons... I think its about money, corruption, a system rigged, most of the people living at the rigged came of the wealthy.. AND those people who are "wealthy" are only "wealthy" due to the money in their bank account and the power that we, the 99%, give to money that keeps them in "power" and the game rigged. Real wealth people value and labor. Those at the top of the system have engineered a world in which those at the "top" have figured out a way to steal the labor and the value of people and nature to keep us on their rat wheel.

Awaken! Realize that at a basic level no matter what ur background, color, religion, etc people want peace and to be with their family, friends, community, and want to live in a fair, just world where people are able to live in peace, love, and comfort. The game is rigged to divide us, to create fear, to educate our children based on their view of how the word should operate... They utilize media, politics, fear, hate to keep people in a chaotic, normalized state. In the US we work harder, to get further behind.. to the point that we have "no time" to protest, to involve ourselves in our politics, to know our community, to even have time to be with our families. The occupy people have taken a stand to say NO. To occupy their space. To give voice to people who have been thinking things have got to change. We can't keep going down this spiral. Its amazing. I'm so happy to see this in my lifetime. We have an opportunity to examine the system and think about how it should work to favor all the people in a humane, fair, and peaceful manner, while realizing there are 7 billion of us inhabiting the earth and we need to figure out our shared interest in sustainable living practices along with thinking towards our future.. Being good stewards for ourselves and to our planet.

this is what occupy means to me.

5. For me it's about people so rich that their money is power
When wealth becomes power, time to take that wealth away from whoever has it. We're going to be a true democracy or fall to anarchy sometime in the near future, because the alternative is corporate fascism, and we've been living under one version or other of that since before this country was founded. I'm hoping for democracy, with a socialist economy, but anything is better than leaving that power in the hands of the few.

6. Just read Rolling Stone this wk, Matt Taibbi tells all you need to know!
The why OWS is so important and has occurred is all in this amazing about the corruption that has permeated AMERICAN POLITICAL SYSTEM since Ronald Reagan started dehumanizing the poor to create the first wave of hate and divide among the american people. Then the govt was always "the problem" and then came the unions, those pesky nags who would not let WALL STREET HUSTLERS grab it all up in one fell swoop. It took 30 years, but oh how far we have come. No wonder Obama was and is confused. Who could ever in his wildest dreams that that american political system has sunk so low as to endanger the future democracy of this nation. Who would have thought, that men and women who reached the US CONGRESS would betray their people for a buck. As if there isn't enough wealth to spread around, there is never enough to satisfy some men' greed and arrogance. I never would have believed that men such as John Boehnner and McConnell were so capable of betraying their oath of office to gain favors for the rich and powerful. Rob taxpayers, its okay. Luntz is the worst of all, because he is the wordsmith, the master mind behind the SELL and CON. He frames the message and the GOP/TBAGGERS carry the water.

7. Well, since the latest poll says that 57% of Americans support
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 02:55 PM by sabrina 1
what they are about, and seem to understand it, even higher in NYC, eg, closer to 69% with over 80% supporting their right to be in Zuccotti Park. I don't think they need to worry. 80% in national polls also support them protesting even those who either disagree or don't know why they are protesting.

Not sure what you mean by 'covering the movement itself'. If you mean coverage of Police Brutality against American Citizens, that is not about the movement itself, it is an exposure of how the Corporate State has taken over all of our institutions, which is part of the reason why so many Americans support the movement.

Highlighting the propaganda machine called 'news media' is another element of the root cause of all that is wrong in the US.

The movement is just six weeks old, it has its own media, both print and audio and video, it has planned events as far ahead as next May, in coordination with Occupiers around the country and the world because the Global Corruption that has been occupying all governments, affects people everywhere.

The message is in their title, which is why it is so easily understood by a majority of people around the world. 'OCCUPY WALL STREET'. The goals are clear, starting with 'REMOVING WALL STREET FROM OUR GOVERNMENT'. That's implicit in the title. And when our Civilian Police are clearly protecting WALL STREET, that is part of the problem. And when our media is caught EDITING NEWS to favor WALL STREET and all the institutions corrupted by its influence, that is all very powerful evidence that the Movement was necessary to protect this democracy.

Since in just six weeks the movement has spread like wildfire across this country and united with the rest of the world on every continent, I don't think we need to worry too much as it continues to grow each day. Which means their message is clear to a majority of people worldwide.

8. If you don't get what the Occupy movement is about -
immediately, viscerally - you are part of the problem.

You have lost touch with your human heart.

12. It's against corruption and the media is as corrupt as any in history
So, yeah, it's also about the media. That's why they've created their own newspaper and communicate via the internet which has turned out to be infinitely better the media ever was, even in it's finest hour.
