Events need to provide their own security from volunteers, have an inner perimeter which is guarded by those individuals, and an outer perimeter guarded by cops. This will prevent skirmishes from happening. The cops won't have any excuse to start shit, and neither will the protesters.

3. Seeing the goings on at the OWS sites prompted me to
work on my hand to hand self defense skills. The hard part is knowing what constitutes "resisting" arrest as opposed to avoiding physical injury. I guess any reaction to force would be considered "resisting" so I guess I'm doomed to paying the price for avoiding having my skull broken.

So be it.

5. But it is not only you that pays - once the protest begins to use violence
back then the cops have their excuses. Non-violence means not fighting back even when they use violence. That is exactly what they want you to do.

2. Good idea, but backwards.
The cops need to be in a small pen on the INSIDE, the rest of us need to be on the OUTSIDE, free to assemble and petition our government for a redress of our grievances.

4. And some of the protesters will be very unhappy about the event security.
Some of them will view the event security as being a type of police. Further, the event security will have no legal authority to keep anybody inside the inner perimeter. And what do they do when the police come inside anyway?
