Honorable mention - "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back." - by Island Blue

This was difficult for me to choose as each finalist had wonderful photos that deserve mention. I chose "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back." as it had an immediate emotional impact on me when I first saw it, and even more so when I realized what the photo and the title were referencing; not to mention perfection in composition, exposure and focus.

9. The photo is a detail of a statue of local hero Richard Etheridge

who (among other accomplishments)was the first African-American United States Life-Saving Service Keeper at Pea Island Station. Here are a couple of links with more details about this amazing man and his fellow crew members.

The paraphrase of the quote (which is now an unofficial Coast Guard motto) is actually credited to another US Life-Saving member, Patrick Etheridge who was not related to Richard.

Here is another photo of the statue that I took on the same day. I thought the rain really helped to set the mood considering the heroic actions taken by this man (and his crew).

I feel like I got really lucky with my shot - the field was strong and the entries varied and excellent.
