Elementary school to join Occupy Oakland strike
The staff at Bridges Academy at Melrose sent a bilingual flier home to families, inviting them to join them in Wednesday’s general strike in support of Occupy Oakland — and informing them that teachers would not be in their classrooms that day.

They’re meeting at the East Oakland elementary school in the morning and traveling to Oakland City Hall together, by BART.

“We, the teachers at Bridges, are joining the Occupy Oakland protest on Wednesday, November 2. We will not be in our classrooms that day, all day,” the flier says. “We are the 99%!!”

2. Wow!

So now we have nurses, Marines, some police, and now TEACHERS! This is WONDERFUL!

Yeah, the protesters are all just "dirty hippies," huh. :sarcasm:

This took courage. They will receive pushback for this from the media and from the brainwashed, who will complain about taking time away from the children. Let the world hear that they are doing this for the FUTURE of the children.

K&R for much-needed hope for the future!

occupyoakland Occupy Oakland
BREAKING NEWS: #SEIU Local 1021, the biggest union in Oakland, just joined Wednesdays #GeneralStrike They're callin workers into the street!

Those teachers, however, are incredibly brave and will be teaching their students an invaluable lesson. I can't wait to see them all there. Today my daughter told me that she would join me. I am very happy. :)

7. How about them making a better future for the kids?
One day is nothing compared to what is being threatened to kids' future.

8. Taking an unscheduled day off from potential instruction time does
provide a break from the incessant testing - but does it help to solve the problem of not teaching the students mentioned in an earlier thread?

Here's the thread on the testing issue http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x2212745

Will the day be made up?

10. Good point
I'm not sure I agree this is a good idea. Just thought it was interesting to see the Occupy movement growing to include elementary schools.

11. I truly did not mean to imply I was finding fault with your OP, but I too thought
it odd that there are complaints about time spent with testing, and then take the unplanned day off.

My apologies if it wasn't clear what I meant.
