Yahoo Chat Rooms Are Full of Hateful Right Wingers
I logged into a Yahoo political chat room just to check it out. Hoo-boy! What a collection of ignoramuses! I was amazed at the arguments these folks came up with, and apparently believe. For instance, I didn't think anybody would dispute the observable reality that Bush inherited a surplus and left behind an enormous deficit. Turns out there are folks in America who think this is something you believe only if you're a Democrat.

My stay lasted about ten minutes and it was unpleasant. If there are many more people in America like those in that one randomly chosen Yahoo chat room, we're not close to having a common ground as a basis of rational discussion.

Yahoo is full of assholes.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all people.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to all
even to the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive people, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself to others you will become vain and bitter;
there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let not this blind you to the virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have the right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

3. I know what you mean about chat rooms..

I used to go to Meebo.com. There were always a ton of haters, going to international rooms and bragging how they were better than anyone else, and that people from other countries just "sucked" and were not as good as Americans. These were always probably people who fit between the 12 and 25 year old range, and were pretty much the image of "ugly Americans".

I myself love going 3-D to IMVU.com. I have my own room, and have been fairly successful keeping out the haters. Our room has moderators or "mods" in the room most of the time. We have a set of rules we all follow, and everyone who comes in should know the number one rule is to be "polite". We will not tolerate any kind of racist statments, homophobic statements, or sexist statements. Those people will be quickly booted (out for 20 minutes) or banned (forever) if they can't behave themsleves. Our room is open to all languages. People who have a problem with that, are asked to leave as well.

my particular room is about Asian culture and music, so we don't cover religion or politics. But there are some political rooms, and many of them are well moderated as well. Rooms can handle up to ten people, though sometimes it may drift over a bit.

As for IMVU, its simple a program you can down load,activate and its free. You will be able to put your avatar into some clothing, and go off and explore on your own, rooms you would like to hang out in, or travel from room to room. There are a few haters, there but they don't last long in a room, if an owner or mod is there.

6. I came to DU from a long-running Yahoo board.
We used to call it "The Tiity Board," because the initial post (mine) was about John Ashcroft covering up the breasts of the Statue of Justice. The board lasted for years and tens of thousands of posts. It was very active, and mostly liberal. It was like a DU that allowed/encouraged dissent. We even held a few Titty Board meet-ups in NYC, and one of my cohorts still hosts a blog called Timbuk3, where some of the old regulars still post. While posting there I was pointed to DU. After Yahoo eliminated that board structure for their current one, they kept the Titty Board online...we never figured out why, but it was pretty cool.

9. This is typical teabagging behavior. Pretty much like most of their military service
All gung-ho for war but too chickenshit to join the military. They would rather be nameless faces cackling about how great war is instead.
