Why no baby will be put in the global spotlight this time

World of 'contradiction' awaits 7 billionth person (AFP)

30 October 2011, 7:53 AM

<snip>“Plenty of food, but still a billion people going to bed hungry every night. Many people enjoy luxurious lifestyles, but still many people are impoverished,” he said in an interview with Time magazine. snip

An extra billion people have been added to the world’s population since just after midnight on October 12, 1999 when the United Nations named a Bosnian baby, Adnan Mevic, as the Earth’s six billionth inhabitant.

The secretary general at the time, Kofi Annan, was pictured in a Sarajevo hospital with Mevic in his arms.

The Mevic family is now struggling in poverty at their Sarajevo home, which is partly why no baby will be put in the global spotlight this time.

1. Huge problem
And a real discussion of overpopulation is not welcome on this planet.

2. It's a good day on this forum.
I'm so glad to see you all talking about this.

I came to DU because I couldn't find a place to discuss population. I discovered politics, in the process. But until recently there has been all but no discussion of this most important subject.

I personally think it's all over. Not doom and gloom. In fact now quite the opposite. But that is another discussion.

3. I think it's THE topic
In my mind, I believe it is the topic that should be the big box with all the other topics branching out from it like, energy, food, global warming, wealth disparity, capitalism, democracy, RELIGION, feminism, human rights, equality, animal rights, war. Over-population hovers over them all like a black cloud as I see it.

How do you see things not being "doom and gloom" now, I am asking because I could use a boost!

4. You nailed it! Too bad we're a minority who see this.
It IS the topic from which all others extend. Except for some. Greed will always be with us, but one again population exacerbates it.

I'd love to tell you about this guy I know, but it's difficult, and I'm short of time right now. He's basically a genius who grew up on the streets of San Francisco. The most intelligent person I've ever met in terms of being able to condense things down to a simple idea. We only talked about this a couple of nights ago, and I haven't had time to research the validity of his statements. Basically he was saying that in the previous ice ages the animals on earth evolved to be more refined, or something. For example, dinosaurs became birds. He's one of the few people who sees population as the pivotal subject. So he's aware. We're working on a fuel cell fired hot water heater, by the way. It's our attempt to try and save the planet. So after ten years of talking about this subject, he made a statement that I thought was brilliant. It was after I mentioned that CO2 stays in the atmosphere not for the 120 years we had previously thought, but thousands of years. Which is big shit for the planet. We're in way worse trouble than even I thought. So now we're headed for disaster. He said that in the event that we do have another ice age, humans will probably come out the other end in an evolved form. Like Pterodactyls to birds, humans may very well come through this in some kind of refined form.

I've spent 40 years in a terrible state over this. I saw it one day as clear as could be. Around 17 years old I became conscious. And it has been just awful to watch. My mother being raped, is how I see it. Not easy. But at 45 I couldn't take the stress anymore. My body started falling apart. Now I'm in survival mode. I'm eating right, working out in the gym four hours per day. It may be permanent, the fatigue. But I'm beginning to be resigned that I can't make others conscious. I have to try and survive. I hate the ugliness. The noise, the contrails, the cars, the houses. I've gone nuts over this.

Well, I've got to run. But in my life I don't think I've ever had another person come to me asking about this subject. You're the first. Feel free to ask me anything.

5. We don't see what we're told not to look at
Gregorian, thanks! I absolutely get what you are saying. I have had a gradual awakening to a belief that we've been, as a conscious species, lied to as a matter of course. I have always seen population as a root problem, and with that religion (as a control mechanism). Religion helps keep this issue from being addressed and big corporations see more people as both more consumers and more slave labor. I don't understand why others don't see all this either. I'm at a point where I really don't believe anything we are told. I see a news story and immediately try to figure out the motives for why it is being presented and figure out the spin. I am not willing to dismiss any theory as to what's going on at this point.

Keep up the good work! We need people with ideas.
