Things You Have To Believe To Be A Republican Today, No.6
Because it's Halloween and no ghost, goblin, or spook is scarier than knowing there are people that really think Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Ron Paul, or Sarah Palin would make good Presidents...

Another look into the world of conservative doublethink. Previous editions are available at my journal page:

Thinks You Have To Believe To Be A Republican Today:

* Completely tanking the economy through default is a better idea than raising the top marginal tax rates 3%.

* A Muslim who commits an act of terrorism that kills innocents proves that Islam is an evil religion. A Christian who commits an act of terrorism that kills innocents proves that he's not a "Real Christian".

* Corporations are people. Social Security and Medicare recipients are not.

* The recall of Grey Davis just after he won an election was just and proper. The recall of the Wisconsin union busters just after they won an election requires a constitutional amendment to keep it from happening again.

* The death of Muammar Khadafy is a great credit to the policies of George W. Bush, John McCain, France, England, and just about anybody you could name except for that Obama guy.

* Rich people pay too many taxes, poor people don't pay enough.

* The crack in the Washington Monument caused by the August 2011 earthquake is deeply symbolic of the decline of America. The fact that the epicenter of the quake was in the congressional district of Eric "Gut the National Geological Survey" Cantor doesn't mean anything.

(The truth is that neither one is an omen or a symbol. The second part is just deeply ironic)

* A green energy company failing and defaulting on its government loan proves that government interference in private industry is bad. Banks failing and requiring government bailouts to pay their executives' eight figure bonuses is just a necessary aspect of living in a capitalist society.

* Execution is a just punishment for capital offenses. Capital offenses now include "Embarrassing the justice system by being innocent" and "Threatening the low tax rates of millionaires by getting sick while uninsured"

* Drumming up support for infrastructure spending at the crumbling bridge linking the congressional district of the Republican Speaker of the House with the home state of the Republican Senate Minority Leader is a cheap political move. Brazenly threatening the chairman of the Fed if he tries to improve the economy during an election year is a brave act of principle.

* Assembling peaceably in a public park and speaking out against Wall Street greed is an "unruly mob". Assembling to wave around assault weapons and scream angrily about "Second Amendment remedies" because a black President wants to give you better health care is a "peaceful protest"

* Protesting against the actions of a duly-elected United States government is quintessentially American. Protesting against the actions of unelected corporate executives, however, is the most anti-American thing ever. (From a comment by Jon Stewart, 10-5-2011)

* Someone paying a fine because they failed to buy health insurance is an outrage. Someone dying because they failed to buy health insurance is sound economic and social policy.

1. Disgusting
Such hypocrisy.

I have to say though - both sides are prejudiced against Arabs. Why can't the credit for winning their revolution go to the Libyans? They formed a transitional council, they fought on the ground and were injured or lost limbs or were killed. Libyans defended Misrata from Gaddafi's forces against all odds. It was a clever plot by Libyans that led to Tripoli being liberated so quickly.

I'm glad that the UN voted to protect the Libyans, and I'm glad that Obama sent some US forces to help, but really - the credit goes to the Libyans themselves.
