200 Cats Found in SoCal Storage Unit

200 Cats Found in SoCal Storage Unit

PASADENA ( KTLA) -- A 62-year-old woman is facing possible animal cruelty and neglect charges after humane society officers seized more than 140 cats from a private storage space in Pasadena.

Most of the animals were kept in filth-crusted cages stacked on top of each other.

Officers say several dead cats were found in a freezer.

Tanya Regan of Temple city cared for the animals and usually went to the storage space after midnight to feed them, the Pasadena Star-News is reporting.

Regan has been cited and released on her own recognizance.

Society spokeswoman Ricky Whitman said they will pursue animal cruelty and neglect charges.

--------------------------

Nine cats and 2 dogs were also seized from Regan's home.

Volunteers who helped Regan care for the animals tipped off authorities.

Whitman said the humane society will care for the animals.

Humane society officials say this is the second-largest seizure in its 108-year history.

1. Another rescuer who went crazy trying to do too much.

Her intention was never to be cruel. But she couldn't limit herself in face of all that need.

on edit: My cat David came from a place like that. He was insane for the first ten years of his life, the trauma was that great.

The rule of rescue: There will always be need. Never do more than you can. Never waste all of yourself by trying to do more than you can. Do what you can.

3. I would never have more than 3 cats in a large house
or two cats in a small house or apartment. Any more than that and they start to show signs of stress. Cats are largely solitary and very territorial animals. They hang together at night but need to be able to get away from each other during the day, even if they're sociable with each other.

Hoarding animals is a mental illness. Hoarders always see themselves as rescuing the animals from a worse fate (!) and never seem to realize what stress living in filth with too many other animals places on them.

Adopting a hoarded animal is a real challenge and the stress undoubtedly shortens their lifespan. However, some of them are adoptable and should be given a chance.

6. David wasn't adoptable. That's why I took him.
No one else would have him.

7. Good for you.
I have one that was unadoptable, too. She was a hissy spitty insane kitten that I rescued along with a number of other. I ended up keeping her because I knew no one else would take her. It took me 4 months just to be able to touch her.

10 years later she follows me around and sits on my lap and sleeps right next to me. I still can't get her in a carrier, though. Getting her to the vet is a major endeavor. Those kittens that I rescued were the reason I got involved with our local TNR program.

8. David had kidney failure.
I will always believe he was one of the Chinese victims. I had to give him fluids and I was not very good at it. But if I held up the fluid bag and syringe, he would jump into my lap. When he stopped being insane, which happened very gradually, he became a hell of a cat.

5. I can totally see how something like this happens....
Aquart nailed it in the first response. The need is so great. Once you start rescuing cats, you begin to see them everywhere. Some truly feral, but many are abandoned pets. It's so awful.
