3. If he does, I hope they have pies at the ready.
Nader deserves a ton of credit for the economic devastation of the last decade.

6. So the Bush era had nothing to do with the economic collapse?
The massive deregulation, massive deficit spending, and general "fuck it all" approach to governing it entailed? We'd have been in the same place after eight years of President Gore?

9. Maybe you're young - this started with Reagan
and we've endured 30+ years of very conservative rule. I do agree George W was particularly bad - cutting capital gains tax was very bad for the economy but it didn't start with him.

11. Some people say the first shot was fired in '78
A SCOTUS decision, not the work of elected officials: According to some economic historians "Marquette v. First of Omaha" kicked off financial deregulation.

17. Brennan's court - he was thought of as being very liberal.
Funny how these things come down on both sides of the aisle ...

23. He may have been more liberal on social issues, but economic issues put food on the table.
And even in the 1970s, the politicians in the Senate needed money for their re-election campaigns, so obviously there is a temptation to cater to the wealthy 1% who can donate the most money. A favor they could pay back would at least be to give consent to an economic right-winger to the Supreme Court whenever the president does pick one.

10. 1999 - Clinton Signs Legislation Overhauling Banking Laws
http://www.nytimes.com/1999/11/13/business/clinton-signs-legislation-overhauling-banking-laws.html

"President Clinton signed into law today a sweeping overhaul of Depression-era banking laws. The measure lifts barriers in the industry and allows banks, securities firms and insurance companies to merge and to sell each other's products.

''This legislation is truly historic,'' President Clinton told a packed audience of lawmakers and top financial regulators. ''We have done right by the American people.''

The bill repeals parts of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act and the 1956 Bank Holding Company Act to level the domestic playing field for United States financial companies and allow them to compete better in the evolving global financial marketplace..."

Of course Bush helped, but he did not do it alone. And several of the people who helped enable the economic collapse were consulted and/or appointed by Obama, Summers, Rubin, Geithner and Bernanke.

14. Had he cared about his country and the well-being of its citizens 11 years ago, he would have taken
a seat then.

Thanks for eight years of George W. Bush, Ralph.

22. There are a lot of people who admire his life's work. Me included.
He's always been a hero of mine. And anyone who is good enough for Zinn to vote for in 2008 is good enough for me.
