The shooting at the Bay District board meeting was not “a spur of the moment thing,” Panama City Police Chief John Van Etten told The Associated Press. Police also found anti-government paraphernalia at Clay A. Duke’s home, but the chief didn’t provide details.

“He was obviously was not happy with our government,” Van Etten said.

1. I'm sorry but politics is the lamest excuse for anyone to shoot up some people
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 04:38 PM by CRF450
Anyone that does what this guy did is effed up in the head, period! Too bad that many shootings like this are triggered by political grudges...

3. My understanding is that he was mentally ill and on medication for his illness.
When his wife lost her health-care insurance they could no longer afford the meds. This can be laid squarely at the feet of for-profit health-care.

4. That's what I'm seeing too, and it's no surprise...
It always turns out to be someone who's mentally ill or been off their meds.

15. Meds
Often, the meds can cause an amplification of the mental disorder they are prescribed to alleviate. Especially when you've been on them for a while and abruptly quit taking them.

5. He was treated for bipolar disorder/manic depression and could not afford his meds -
he was denied SSI 5 times and appealed yet again, was unable to work and his wife had been laid off. (Per MSNBC this afternoon)

The man was a casualty of our health care non-system.

6. I saw the same segment.
They completely glossed over the "unable to afford his medication" component of the story. They knew where the circle-V symbol came from though.

7. He could afford that big ass gun and ammunition but couldn't afford his meds?
Something not right with that story.

8. That gun and ammo probably cost less than a single...
month of psyc meds. Was it even registered to him? He was a felon after-all.

9. Quetiapine (Seroquel) 300mg tablets
100 count - roughly $150 for generics. Being the standard release formula, and him being a big guy, that could easily be only a 30 day supply.

And that assuming whatever he was prescribed isn't one of these bullshit derivatives that are barely different at all, but patented again and marked up more. Examples being:

Effexor and Pristiq
Celexa and Lexapro
Seroquel and Zyprexa

Zyprexa costs about as much as Viagra last time I bothered to look - $10+ a pill. There's obviously no way he could afford that without insurance.

I'm sure he could have bought that gun and ammunition if he skipped buying meds for a month or two, easily.

12. I saw a news report
with his wife, who explained that he intentionally did not shoot anyone. He could have, but aimed away from hitting anyone, as his intention was to get their attention. I also heard that a security agent didn't kill him, but that he shot himself.

20. Hmmmm, I wonder how many
Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage and Palin books the guy had?

What was his "freaker" screen name?

Inquiring minds would like to know.
