The first cold snap of the season is turning out to be a record setter.

For the second time in three days, Fairbanks set a new low temperature record. A temperature of 41 degrees below zero — the first 40 below temperature of the season — was recorded at Fairbanks International Airport at 6:29 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. That broke the old record of 39 below set in 1969.

The deep cold has also been accompanied by a decline in air quality.

... Eielson Air Force Base reported a low of 43 below early this morning, which broke the previous record of 40 below in 1969. It was the second day in a row a new record was set at Eielson. It was 42 below there on Wednesday morning.

4. I've experienced wind chill down there, but not actual temperature.
That is deadly cold.

5. Fairbanks and surrounding areas..check in...questions please..
What do you do to protect your animals from this deadly cold ( horses, cows, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats).
Is this normal yearly climate conditions and really no big deal?

6. I live 300 miles or so south. the wind has been horrendous and
the wind chill was awful. the coldest I've even been was -56 degrees at my brother's house at a lake in nearby Sterling. My dad drove 80' pipe to Prudhoe Bay during the pipeline and the coldest he ever saw was -180 below.

You keep your pets in. People around here have farms and the animals grow long coats-horses etc. Dogs coat up if they are that kind but you keep them in if you love them. Sled dogs and huskies and the like do well in the cold if they have a shelter to go into. Neighbors keep chickens in a good coop. Most people around here cull their cows down to what they need for next year or what they can weather over. Its a lot of work.

The cats have cat doors around here. :) Live in a cat crazy neighborhood. My dogs are very old (17 and 16) and are completely house dogs. I don't know anyone who keeps pigs through the winters here.
