Michelle Obama Booed At NASCAR Race
Source: Huffington Post

Michelle Obama and Jill Biden were booed at NASCAR's season finale at the Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday.

The appearance was part of an initiative to honor military troops and families. The first lady and vice president's wife also served as grand marshals for the big race.

At the beginning of the race, an announcer introduced the two women, who were met with a loud combination of both cheers and boos.

This is hardly the first time the first and second lady have been booed at a sporting event. Their appearance at World Series games in both 2009 and 2011 were met with a less-than-warm welcome.

9. But they're hated. Michelle's been ridiculed and the subject of racist crap since Day One.

Although it's more about them being Democrats than race, though.

2. Seems to me that they were met fairly warmly in St. Louis
The World Series. I heard many cheers anyway. Of course, my hearing isn't the best anymore so perhaps I wasn't aware of the boos.

16. Yes
St. Louis fans are pretty polite. I watched the game and didn't hear any boos. I'm sure the commentators would have mentioned it there had been any either.

3. That behavior makes me embarassed to be a sports fan
since so many of them get their news from Fox News/Rush Limbaugh and never think critically about those issues but would rather spend hours on end analyzing sports trivia.

44. Those are sports by comparison.
In sports, the kinetic force comes from the human body or gravity, e.g., jumping and falling, laying down cards, setting balls into motion.

NASCAR is a technological competition among corporate-owned workshops that does, however, require very fast reflexes from the machine operators.

47. So does my nephew's video games
But, I'd hardly argue that sitting on your ass and playing with a joystick is a sport. Neither is sitting on your ass in a car.

If NASCAR is a sport, then so is my morning commute. And I even make some right turns!

18. Doesn't matter
you could have had a highly decorated Marine who was wounded in battle there, and if he was in any way representing the views, or initiatives of the Obama Adminstration, these idiots would have booed him...

wait...they "did" boo a highly decorated Marine who was wounded in battle. Not to mention that the First and Second Lady were there to promote their program to aid our military families.

What class....

7. "all that for a flag" - that ridiculous RW email forward that many in the crowd surely have seen or
probably heard on their hate-radio is part of the reason they boo Michelle. Supposedly, in the 9/11 memorial video where they are playing bagpipes and they are folding up the US flag, she leaned over to pres Obama and said that, but the truth is, you can't really tell what she's saying, and the meaning of why she's saying it! He merely agrees with what she says as it's going on, but man, it got the right wing in a tizzy. My old coworkers in CO sent it to me and said that's why vets can't stand the Obamas. I said, you mean, because you can't tell what she's saying and it drives you all crazy? ha! They make up controversy where there is none just to foster their hatred of Democrats, esp. the moderate, Obama, who you'd think they'd be pleased with since he's worked with the GOP on several issues including extending B*sh's tax cuts, but no, they have hatred in their eyes! I can't imagine whyyyyy they dislike the Obamas so much. LOL

I would like to say that categorizing all Nascar fans, or any other fans of sports as "rednecks" or "idiots" or anything like that is just wrong though. I know you did not do that in your post but I'm just unloading a bit. Peace to you and yours.

Yes, I agree, cannot throw people in a group and say ALL people that go to the races, because I have been to a few in Daytona! Proudly wore my 24! haha.. My brother was a big Jarrett fan so he hated being next to me because so many NASCAR fans hated Gordon back in the day because he won every third race for a while, until his protege came along and started winning everything. Sadly though, I'm sure more than half of the people at the race booed Michelle. But, in turn, I'm sure more than a 1/3 applauded. It's a free country, but damn, I wish people would use their brains to know what's going on and not listen to Fox for "news". :)

17. If NASCAR had any guts
they wouldn't return to Homestead until their fans stop being idiots.

BTW - Isn't Homestead the place that got leveled by Hurricane Andrew, and then all those billions of dollars in federal "socialism" were spent to help rebuild their lives?

If I recall, they were pissed because they found out the local contstruction companies built them shitty homes that got crushed, and then demanded federal "regulations" to ensure their homes were properly contructed.

NASCAR fans...what a waste of skin. Displaying all the class and intelligence of your typical Teabagger.

Come on boys...tell us about how "great" your fans are.

24. The two ladies handled the situation with awesome class.
They performed the function that they were there for, despite the classless morons that booed them, then they focused on the members of the family that was on the podium with them. One encouraging item is that the boos, when compared to the cheers when the ladies gave the que to start engines seemed a minority of the people in attendance. For the ladies to even get significant cheers from that crowd says that the hold that idiocy and racism has on the South is slipping dramatically.

On the other hand F*** those elected and not elected that are destroying this country.

31. Come on
a lot of people would yell shit at me but I wouldn't expect them to yell shit at my wife or kid. Look, I lost my last job due to standing up for my wife and son, so I know just a little bit about this. They had nothing to do with the battle between me and the administration. But if they were involved with what I was being taken to task for then I would think they were fair game. I think Michelle and Jill are wonderful and doing what needs to be done. It is a shame people like those of us on DU don't realize that but maybe (myself included) should have been slightly easier on the family of past elected officials. I believe all of the people should have respect for families of (the office for which the spouse was dully elected) unless they put themselves out there inject themselves into policy or such. This may not be perfectly written but after 4 glasses of wine what the hell.

Even if we didn't like the current president? What happened to that rule? It was being parroted from Faux News and every Republican pundit and radio host from coast to coast. Don't like Bush? with going 3 wide or 4 wide (or not), no exciting passing, no drafting, no rivalries, no short-track, no long-track, no road course, no driving at speeds around 200mph inches (if that) from the cars to your right/left/in front/behind, no bump-drafting, doesn't matter that the drivers have numerous safety devices, as do the cars and the tracks now.
