Dog honored for keeping man, girl warm in wrecked car
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20111126a3.html

Take a bow-wow: Asako Soma, whose 81-year-old husband, Yoshimasa, was rescued after spending a freezing night trapped in a wrecked car, receives an award on behalf of Junior, the couple's 7-year-old Labrador retriever that saved the day, in the town of Naie, Hokkaido, on Thursday. KYODO

SAPPORO — The town of Naie, Hokkaido, rewarded a dog for keeping his 81-year-old owner and 3-year-old granddaughter warm as they survived a freezing winter night in an overturned car last week.

Junior, a 7-year-old male Labrador retriever, was given a collar with a gold medal and some dog food during an award ceremony Thursday.

Junior's master, Yoshimasa Soma, had taken his granddaughter, Sukai Kimura of Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, out for a ride in Naie on the evening of Nov. 15, saying he was taking Junior for a walk, police said. The girl was visiting Naie with her mother.

While driving along a river in the neighboring town of Urausu, however, he accidentally drove off the road, sending the car rolling down an embankment. When the rolling stopped, the man and the girl found that they were unable to move.

3. About 4 years ago when the dog was about 1 1/2 years ...
Edited on Sat Nov-26-11 07:32 AM by Botany
.... old my son was out on a walk w/the dog and a "creepy guy" came up to try to talk to my son
the lab wasn't thrilled with the guy or him being around "his boy." My son told me the dog went
nuts and lunged at the guy who turned and ran away. Somehow "dogs know" jut what to do when the time
comes.

BTW the lab in the picture looks like he is more interested in the dog food than the awards.

6. Any time one of my dogs didn't like someone, I didn't trust them either.
One time our collie, Bebop, started growling at the door. We couldn't see who was coming up the walk at the time, so she couldn't have picked up any vibes from us and had never seen this person before. Donna's nickname for this guy was "The Weasel"-the dog knew right away. That was the only person she ever growled at.
Here she is in her prime.

Blackie no.1 herewith is noted for history....passed years ago...no record exists of his existence...so I now honor his little soul with this record of his having given us much happiness. RIP blackie #1, a stray we took in. I was four then, barely recall him. My first dog. If there are engrams, I say to his, "hello!".
