I've had a hard time figuring out President Obamas negotiating strategy over the past two years. Giving things away immediately, starting from the middle leaving only room to the right to go. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense and perpetuates the image the right paints of him as weak and ineffective. So I have a tip for the President: when your opponent (the republicans, in case you weren't aware) start negotiating from the extreme right, you start at the extreme left!
If the republicans position is, "WE WANT ALL THE TAX RATES TO REMAIN!!!" Your position is, "We don't want any of the tax cuts to remain."
Then you meet in the middle and only extend the tax cuts for those at the bottom. That way both sides seem to have given and received. If this is unacceptable to your opponents (the republicans, just another reminder, they don't like you) then you walk away. Can we try some of this strategy in the future please?
