Stereotypical DUer
This is for tealurkers. How to spot a progressive.

- We like the idea of protecting endangered species.
- You probably won't see many of us at a monster truck event.
- We might avoid a John Voigt or Mel Gibson movie.
- Probably more interested in seeing Hoover Dam than Las Vegas.
- TV won't be on Fox.
- No pork rinds.
- We have no problem with a 13.7 billion year old universe.
- We think it's a bad idea to let sick people die because they can't afford HC.
- It's none of our business how people pair up. It's actually beautiful.
- We think Multi-nationals and the Military Industrial Complex have agendas.
- We know there is no gay agenda.
- And environmentalists are not terrorists.
- And Muslims are fine.
- Assault weapons are really about killing people, not hunting.
- Iraq & Afghanistan are wars of choice.
- Saddam had no WMD's.
- One cold day does not discredit global climate change.
- An elevated level of hate will not impress god.

And on and on. I know there are some du'ers who probably love monster truck events. I apologize in advance.

1. Whats wrong with pork rinds?
They are delicious!

And what is your definition of an "assault weapon". Once that term is agreed upon (which it's not, not even in existing laws) we can see if we all agree on that or not.

Do you mean the rifles actual military people use or the civilian counterparts that LOOK similar but are not automatic weapons?

That if a hunter used it on an animal, it would shred the animal to bits.

43. ALL semiautomatic weapons shoot as fast the user can pull the trigger...
even the century old semiautmatic weapons. What are you talking about ???

Also, most states have ammunition capacity limits for hunting... usually 3-5 rounds.
I don't see how ANY rate of fire will shred any large animal with only 5 shots.

semi automatic means you squeeze the trigger one time per bullet and fully automatic means you hold the trigger and multiple bullets fly out.

118. I take it you are not a rocket scientist, then?
Because while the difference is not rocket science, it is not as easy as you are implying. There are major differences between rifles issued by the military and SIMILAR rifles available to the public. Do you know what those differences are? Can you define the term "assault rifle"?
We cannot have a conversation on this topic unless we both know what we are talking about. Without defining what you mean, we will probably be talking about two very different items. You are either you are unable or unwilling to define the term you are using, and regardless of the reason, until you do, we cannot have an intelligent, informed conversation on the matter.
I will be here when you are ready to explain what you are talking about.

10. Everything in moderation....
A few pork rinds now and then won't clog arteries or make one fat, especially of one exercises regularly, as I do, so my couch cushions look like new. But thanks for your concern.

We can agree what they are and are not for when we first agree exactly what constitutes an assault weapon.

As far as I am concerned, that 31 bullet Glock used to attempt an assassination of a Democratic House member IS an 'assault weapon.'

It assaulted that 9-year old girl, pretty fucking effectively.

Nobody cares about the gungeon terminology police.

Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 01:48 PM by X_Digger
If it means everything, then it means nothing.

Why not go full-hyperbole and call it a 'weapon of mass destruction'-- that one hasn't been so bent out of shape as to be meaningless- yet.

Reading the above, as well as the OP, I might consider myself a progressive!

Philosphically, I'm actually more of a small conservative. It is so silly how the word conservatism has been highjacked by a bunch of obnoxious radicals. There is actually a strong conservative case for unions, gay marriage, environmental protection, et alii.

I don't think being a progressive is compulsory, to share those ideals. Being open-minded, daring to question yourself, now that is a different matter.

77. In all seriousness, I have NEVER understood why cultural things are included in these litmus tests
Seriously: WHAT do pork rinds have to do with a person's politics? Or monster trucks? And don't tell me it's because of the meat industry blah blah, or else you would've said that a "typical progressive" must be a vegetarian, and that would've caused an even bigger shitstorm. I think you picked pork rinds because they are most common in the south, and everyone knows that there are no progressive southerners :eyes:

Frankly, I think that not judging people because they make different cultural or lifestyle choices than you is far more of a progressive value than not liking pork rinds, but what do I know?

78. I must be a radical
1 - Except for humans. 1/2
2 - I prefer farm combine demolition derbies. 1/2
3 - I avoid movies in general. 2
4 - Both take too much travel. 2
5 - No TV for thirty-five years. 2
6 - No pork. 2
7 - Can't see why the universe should CARE if I have a problem with it. 2
8 - Got me there. 1
9 - As long as it's not coercive, I don't even care about the 'pair' part. 2
10 - Agenda is too strong a word - how about lust? 2
11 - Disagree. The gay agenda is "don't torture us to death. After we're there, let's talk." 1/2
12 - Self-defense. Even Earth First, PETA, etc. 2
13 - They have the same issue Christians do, which is that they refuse to disown their nutcases. 1/2
14 - Assault weapons are about terrorism. Only a few do actual killing. 2
15 - Whose choice? Surely not the Afghanis. Wars of empire. 2
16 - Got me there. 1
17 - Global weirding. 2
18 - Yes it does, just not the god you approve of. The guy with the cloven hooves and horns loves it. 2

Score 28 out of 18.

Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 08:48 PM by delightfulstar
May I add:

- We hate Sprawl Mart
- We try to support our local economies whenever possible
- We can be spiritual, or religious, or secular, or all of the above, without compromising our political principles
- We believe in a free and fair society, and in giving opportunities to as many as possible
- You won't see us spewing hate back at a Freeper, but you'll certainly see us engaging in a passionate debate with them, if need be
- We believe that it's not about race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. - it's about the HUMAN race, as diversity opens our minds to new opportunities

84. A couple of issues
1. I like Vegas as I think do many Democrats/Progressives/Liberals. In fact, I think it is us that like Vegas more than Conservatives and fundies.

2. Many of us do not think Afghanistan was a war of choice

3. there is a disagreement re: whether multinationals and the MIC actually influence policy or to what degree

4. To people who have tried the Atkins diet, to include many Democrats/Liberals/Progressives, pork rinds were suggested as a carb free snack.

103. Too bad the people's republic won't let you watch youtube but here is a brief
"Message to America" that he gave on Mike Huckabee's show on Fox News.

"In one year the American people are witnessing the greatest lie that is cleverly orchestrated by President Obama and his whole administration. The lie is a potent aggression that feeds the needs of people who either have not educated themselves enough to understand the assault upon us all, or the very poor and needy who live to be taken care of. President Obama feeds these people poison, giving them the idea that they are entitled to take from the wealthier, who have lived and worked in a democracy that understands that capitalism is the only truth that keeps a nation healthy and fed.

Now, the lie goes very deep, and President Obama has been cleverly trained in the Alinsky method, and it would be very important that every American knows what that method is. It is a socialistic, Marxist teaching, and with it, little by little, he rapes this nation, taking down our defenses, making new language for the Islamic extremists.

The world who looked up to us, as a symbol of hope and prosperity, now wonders …“What will become of the entire world if America is losing its power?”

The American people who understand exactly what is taking place have come together in the thousands, vowing to try to stay together as a unit of love and freedom, for all men and women, from all walks of life, shivering to think that this once great nation will be a third world country.

This will be the first president to ever weaken the United States of America. President Obama uses his aggression and arrogance for his own agenda against the will of the American people, when he should be using his will and aggression against our enemies. Every loving American for peace, and truth, and the security of our nation, must come out and join the tea parties in their states. The opposition will continue their tactics: they will lie and plant their own bullies amongst us. Everyone must pay close attention to who stands next to them. We can weed out the liars and agitators.

Let us all stay in God’s light.
Let no man put us under.
We can and we will prevail.
God bless us all!"

Obviously some of the political points in the post are valid, things in the list such as trucks, movies, food, and vacation choices are the kinds of things that make liberals and DUers look like snobs and hypocrites.

111. I was going for laughs
mostly. As progressives, we see almost no victories for our causes. I think that's why ridicule is so prevalent here at du. It's a reaction to helplessness maybe. And I like it because it is the precursor to change/revolution. I'd like to see a much bigger group of lean and mean progressives. You'd think that the conservatives would be more relaxed, being that this country resembles their demands. But their hatred is more like an addiction.

My $.02
