..what you think it means.."

HYPERBOLE - whether accuing another Duer of such, or seeing it used in far too many editorials lately, it is getting to be annoying.

thanks.

7. I learned that word from my British English teacher when I was a military brat overseas, and I
have been waiting over 30 years to actually use that word.

Finally! Victory! I used a word I was taught the meaning of 30 years ago!

Hasn't been a very useful word to me, to be honest, but..there it is, stuck in my head.

Of course, when I'm having a conversation, I forget common words (my name, my spouse's name, various nouns...) because I'm going through menopause and my brain is temporarily malfunctioning. But darned if that "litotes" isn't still with me. Thank you, Ms. Smith.

21. Mine was Mrs. Henry. She wouldn't sign off for your graduating
8th grade if you didn't know your prepositions. She warned of this in September so there was no excuse. Don't recall anyone not graduating..LOL.

11. Is that a singular word?
I mean, if I saw an example of it, would I say "That's a litotes"?

13. If I remember right (I could very well be wrong) it's descriptive like hyperbole rather than
a noun like "an understatement." In other words, you could say "it was a fine example of litotes" or maybe "a litotic statement" (or something like that.) Waiting for someone who actually knows a bunch more about the English language than I ever will to come along and correct me.....

16. Hmm.
So I might say "That's litotes" in the same way I'd say "That's hyperbole"?

4. I'm sooooo glad you included that picture.
I had that quote rattling around in my head and I couldn't place where I'd heard it. I just know it was going to bug me forever until I could remember. :)
