Nightly regional update
rotesters in the Egyptian capital Cairo are preparing to stage a "Day of Departure" for President Hosni Mubarak.

Organisers are calling for tens of thousands of people to gather in Tahrir Square, where days of unrest have left at least 300 people dead.

Mr Mubarak is coming under increasing international pressure to resign, with the US now calling for an immediate transition of power.

But he has so far refused to go, saying doing so would leave Egypt in chaos.

In his first interview since anti-government protests began, he told ABC News he was "fed up" with power and would like to resign immediately

Algeria state of emergency: Bouteflika 'signals end'

President Bouteflika reportedly made the announcement at a government meeting in Algiers

Algeria's state of emergency will be lifted in the "very near future", President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is quoted as saying by local media.

However, it remains unclear when the emergency laws - imposed in 1992 - will be repealed.

The announcement follows demands by opposition groups, who have been calling for anti-government protests.

Algeria - like other countries in the region - has recently witnessed demonstrations for greater freedoms.
