The Super Bowl is certainly the most anticipated event for most Americans, but the true political junkies among us will also be anxious to see a pre-Super Bowl interview between Bill O’Reilly and President Obama. The Obama administration clearly granted the interview to O’Reilly on this date to try and draw a large audience. The interview will air live and is expected to last about 15 minutes. While both sides have not released any further details, we can make some fairly educated guesses on what the interview will be like.
O’Reilly previously was granted a rare Fox News interview with then-Senator Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign. O’Reilly asked pointed questions to Obama about “wealth redistribution” and a number of other hot button issues. O’Reilly frequently tried to cut off lengthy answers, and Obama would respond by arguing the question required a more detailed explanation. O’Reilly has said he will be more reluctant to interrupt President Obama as opposed to Senator Obama. Fox News also took some criticism for the number of times (16) Bret Baier interrupted the President in a March, 2010 interview. Generally presidents are given more respect in media interviews.
O’Reilly will almost certainly ask about the protests in Egypt and ask why the President has not been more forceful in calling for President Mubarak’s immediate resignation. O’Reilly, in reflecting a common concern of conservatives, might ask if the President is worried about the Muslim Brotherhood taking over Egypt. The budget deficit and debt ceiling are also likely to be topics of discussion given the pressing nature of each issue in the coming months.
