Please DU this poll: Should Coronado bridge in San Diego be named for Reagan?

Friends – The San Diego Union-Tribune, the region’s biggest paper, is running a poll on a proposal being brought forward locally to name the Coronado Bridge after Reagan. This is the major landmark for all ships entering San Diego Bay and is visible from all over San Diego including downtown.

Poll question:

Do you approve of the suggested name change from the Coronado Bridge to the Reagan Bridge?

Call 619-293-2506 and listen to the statement and hit 2 to have your vote counted to keep the current name.

Note: There is no limit on how many times people can call in and vote!

Naming a bridge for Reagan in San Diego is particularly offensive to many here, since San Diego has 19 Native American tribes, more than any other County in America. Reagan’s record on Indian issues was dismal. He tried to dismantle the Bureau of Indian Affairs, gutted healthcare on reservations, insulted Native Americans by suggested they should become citizens (they already were), and of course portrayed an Indian-killing cowboy in those B-grade movies.

If you agree, please vote, kick, recommend, and forward to like-minded friends.

2. There is an aircraft carrier
in San Diego named after St Ronnie and an airport in D.C. named after St. Ronnie. I say enough!! Keep the Coronado Bridge the Coronado Bridge!! Why should we keep honoring someone who has damaged our country in so many ways?

14. A liberal town in N. CA wanted to name its sewage treatment plant after him.
Not sure if that actually went through.

I would not support naming a thing after him, except perhaps a theater, but even his acting skills lefr much to be desired.

They tried to name a high school here after him and the Indians got that idea killed. GOP stacked the naming committee with politicians and political operatives, but they didn't dare go up against a tribe that owns casinos and was that town's biggest employer and biggest donor to the school district. you should've seen the looks on their faces when a tribal leader testified about Reagan's real record toward Native Americans!

11. Also a community center in El Cajon (SD County); CityBeat skewered that here:

Celebrate Ronald Reagan by looking at crime stats around the Ronald Reagan Community Center

3. If I recall correctly Coronado did more than just portray and "indian-killing cowboy".
He actually killed many Native Americans.

12. Good point, but Coronado is already the name of the island that the bridge leads to,
and there is simply no logic to changing its name to honor someone the Indians hate and who is politically inflammatory.

Now if Coronado is deemed no longer PC, they could just call it the San Diego Bridge, or something non-offensive.

It's one thing to keep historic names that reflect an area's past (do we really want to sanitize every landmark in our region, many of which were named for Spanish conquistadors, U.S. Cavalry officers, or others who may have done things modern day Americans wouldn't approve of.)

It's quite another to consciously choose to name something today for a person who was offensive to so many.

And for what it's worth, I just talked with a friend high up in one of the major tribes. The tribal members all want to see the Coronado name stand instead of Reagan, and are lighting up the phone lines with their calls, I'm told.

15. There's a petition drive to rename the bridge; here are the arguments being used:
Edited on Sun Feb-06-11 01:49 PM by Liberty Belle
http://www.ronaldreaganbridge.com/

among them: Reagan filmed "Hellcats of the Navy" here. He also spent time at the Hotel Del Coronado with his rich pals.

Al Capone also frequented Coronado, but that doesn't mean we should name a bridge after him!

Note to Newbies: If you type :kick: (the word kick with colons on each side) it will push this thread to the top so more people will see it.

16. Only if it was an overpriced boondoggle when it was built
and lack of maintenance due to funding cuts have made it unsafe now.

That's the only kind of thing that should be named after that despicable man, although I've called bounced checks "reagans" for 30 years.

I live in the Mira Mesa section of San Diego, and unfortunately there is a Reagan Road, about two miles from where I live. It is mostly a residential street, but along part of its length it winds around the periphery of a shopping and business district.

I think it was named that before Reagan became the pResident; I would need to check some old (1970's) Thomas Brothers or other maps to be certain. I think Mira Mesa was first developed when Reagan was governor of California, so presumably it was named after him as the then governor.

Mira Meas began its growth spurt in 1969 during Reagan's first term as Governor. When I moved to Mira Mesa in 1980, Reagan Rd pretty much marked the western edge of the area. Mira Mesa Blvd became a dirt road west of Camino Ruiz. We used to go out there to launch model rockets...that's how empty it was.
