High-fructose corn syrup could become 'corn sugar.'
Group opposes name change for sweetener

High-fructose corn syrup could become 'corn sugar.'

What's in a name? The National Consumers League thinks quite a lot, when it comes to food ingredients.

The Washington-based consumer group is taking issue with a proposal before the Food and Drug Administration to change the name of high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener commonly found in soft drinks and processed foods, to "corn sugar" on food labels. The group says consumers have begun to increase their awareness of HFCS and its possible effect on expanding waistlines.

Calling it something else, the group says, is confusing and misleading.

"Regardless of where you stand on the debate over high-fructose corn syrup and its effects on our waistlines and our health, changing the name after decades of use is unfair to consumers," said Sally Greenberg, executive director of NCL.

1. Yeah
Like when Kentucky "Fried" Chicken became KFC to drop that pesky word, with negative connotations, "fried" from the "branding" of the product.

2. It doesn't matter.
As long as it has the word "corn" in it, I will avoid it... as I avoid all corn and starch.

3. The industry is thinking too small here - why not call it "corn vitamins"?
I mean, hell, if you wanta be deceptive, go for it!

HFCS is "commonly" found? Find something that it's not in. Americans are corn-fed. We either eat the corn directly, as in HFCS, or we eat corn-fed beef, corn-fed, pork, corn-fed chickens, corn-fed catfish, corn-fed shrimp, et al.

When I was growing up, "corn-fed" meant fat. They were right then, and they're right now.

I do notice a few foods are now putting on the label that they have no HFCS in them - one particular ketchup I saw the other day. This all started with the huge tariffs on sugar to make Florida Republicans a ton of money, anyway; not a natural outcome of any kind.

i noticed that HFC is really slimy. It makes everything feel like slime to me.

It will be a great year to make your own fruit preserves, sauces, pickles since they are putting that slime in everything.

11. a great time to learn how to cook
if people don't already know how. That crap is in bread, pasta sauces, frozen foods, etc. It's hard to find processed food that doesn't have it.

13. People just have to know to look ar labels. You can find
plenty of items that don't have it but as you note it is prevalent in every food group, even those we wouldn't expect.

When my sister was complaining about it years ago I rather snugly said I didn't think it was in my diet, I was wrong.
I looked at my "health bread", it was there, in my cereal, my ketchup and on and on.
You can be sure I have read labels since.
Some manufactures don't use it and have said they would not. Aunt Millie is on...
But many manufacturers use it in some products and not others.
There are many ice creams that have it and many that don't but then I figure they might be using that rgbh milk and that doesn't get labeled.

Oy vey

BUT THERE IS A SAFE WAY TO AVOID BOTH! Move to just about any other country where all our fake/altered food are banned. Other countries will not take our milk for drinking and they won't take our fake corn or our "corn sugar" by any name.

We are the experimented upon and usually we do not get to know it. Our food, drinks, cosmetics, shampoos and all have to be reformulated for sales in Canada or overseas but they keep selling the rejects to us.

7. Brilliant scheme by the industry which is currently under attack
With all the discussions about obesity and its causes today, it is no wonder the corn sugar group is pushing for a change. They are just protecting their greedy instincts to keep fattening America while thinning our wallets.

They are preying on America STUPIDITY! :nuke:

12. They're already calling it that in commercials.
Just like Sugar Pops are now Corn Pops, Sugar Smacks are now Dig 'em Smacks or what ever the hell they call them. In their commercials they say that "in moderation" is the key, except that the stuff is in almost everything we eat in huge amounts. Sometimes I look at a cooler in a store and wonder how many gallons of that crap are in this one cooler, then try and multiply it by 100,000 stores.

31. Really confusing, but corn syrup (Caro) has no HFCS
Noticed the store brand of corn syrup was seriously discounted (not on sale, just cheap) compared to Caro (both light and dark varieties). The Caro syrups were splashed with big "No HFCS" labels. I looked, the store brand had it listed first.
