Why does the Religious Right claim the military for itself?
If you were ever forced to attend a fundamentalist church like I was, you might remember the service on or just before the 4th of July. You know what I'm talking about. The one when they play all the music from the armed forces, etc? And now, they're going into fits over DADT's repeal. Of all the secular institutions in American, they claimed the military first and foremost as their own. Why is that? Is it because they have the guns?

1. The Religious Right also fought desegregation in the military
and in the public. They use their bibles and zeolotry as weapons against those these deem inferior.

7. Is that the same thing as having a moral objection to it, or is that something more effete?
If we're talking about Liberals, it may be their personal moral objection to the military, a moral decision that they cannot, as Liberals, deny to anyone else no matter whether those others make that decision one way or another.

But then, the terms Progressive and Liberal are not interchangeable are they? One may be Liberal and Progressive, but not all Progressives are Liberal.

9. Many conservatives think they are too enlightened and civilized to serve in the military.

3. The military is a good channel into outfits like Xe, whom the Religious Right's masters, the
corporate royalty who own and run this country, want to keep available and well staffed, in order to suppress any armed revolution?

So it's the RR + Military = an important servant class for TPB. The palace guard.

4. It's because the military and religion have a similar rigid and
hierarchical, top-down structure. Also because the peons at the bottom are always supposed to shut up and do what they're told.

5. Because beneath it all, the RRers are candy-ass pansies.
Legions of those folks dodged serving in the military in one way or another. For them, using the military is a way to assuage their frustrated glory fantasies.

12.  Their religion has been hijacked
They claim the military for themselves because they're confused about what the founder of their religion taught.

15. The religious right thinks it owns EVERYTHING,
especially culture itself, all trappings of power and authority, the organization of society and YOU.

They do not play fair, and that's the point: they're better than you are, and you should be happy you're tolerated to any degree at all.

The religious mindset (faith) is simply another expression of conservatism (certainty), and it shouldn't be the least bit surprising that religious people and religious organizations tend to be conservative and even reactionary.

Mercifully, for all its many faults, Christianity has a couple of built-in safety valves of decency: the core teachings of caring for the weak, and the most important concept of secularism in government. That last one's a bigee, too: without it, Christianity is just a mere stoning's throw away from Islam.
