What is the Muslim Brotherhood like?
I was under the impression that they were pretty moderate. I've heard stories about them forming a human shield so Christians could pray in peace and Christians forming a shield so that the Muslims could pray without fear also. It sounds like the different religions are able to coexist in Egypt. However, I read that there is some debate if the Brotherhood advocates violence or not. As I was leaving a party this evening, I got into a small argument with a devote Christian who thinks that ALL Muslims are fundamentally evil to the core (nope, no bigotry there) and thinks that the Brotherhood will be the downfall of Egypt.

So am I being naive?

1. Fraternal machivelians using Islam would be my guess.
By the name Brotherhood, sounds like they are linking to fraternal groups.

Just a guess, they could just be a news story, not even any group that exist.

Why would it matter.

I am due beer and travel money, and that has not been sent to me.

3. Is it possible that the Brotherhood has your beer and travel money?
If so, that would be true injustice, as they do not like beer.

However, they may have used the travel money to hajj it to Mecca.

6. That is funny.
However they don't have my beer and travel money, although some think like that, thinking that what I have posted is part of that, if that is the case, they can live in the horrific pain of their just due for the double fault.

Once for not correcting the due, and then for stealing that correction from there perspective.

2. One of the protesters tweeted that the MB are like the Tea Party
--- but with social services and without the violence.

5. I've heard snippets that they broke with the part of the Brotherhood that advocated
violence -- for e.g., Osama bin Laden was part once, but he left because of their refusal to engage in violence.

I've also heard that they do believe in and would ideally like to implement Sharia law. I don't know exactly what all that entails, but I don't think it jibes with democracy.

As I said, I've just seen/heard stuff like this so please don't think I know what I'm talking about!

Here's info from Wiki:

And here's their official English website:

7. I've read that they're moderate too. I was very dismayed, however, by
a recent Pew research study which found that 84% of Egyptians favor the death penalty for people who leave the Muslim religion. 82% of Egyptians also favor stoning for adultery, so I'm not really sure what "moderate" means in Egypt.

12. Islamic fundamentalists, of the same mold as Christian fundamentalists,
They think that they've got all the answers, and want to force their answers upon the rest of us. Up until twenty years ago they were willing to use violence in pursuit of their aims, but during the nineties they gradually toned down the violent rhetoric and eschewed the use of violent means.

They're dream is to now take over Egypt, and other ME countries, by using the ballot box, but that is, at least in Egypt, a long, long shot. To prove their sincerity and trustworthiness, last week they came out and stated that they wouldn't be fielding a presidential candidate in the new presidential elections.

14. they sort of espouse islamic liberation theology
they renounced violence a long time ago and they provide public services (food, medical, etc.) that the military-NDP joint-dictatorship won't.
