2. I'm very confused about Social Security - doesn't it pay for itself...
...with monies workers and employers contribute? Why is it considered a big drain?

5. I have no idea....hopefully someone can chime in and give us an answer??
Or you can try asking in a new post in GD, as those with the answer may not click to see this graph.

I wish I understood all of this more, but reading about ties my brain up in knots. :)

7. SS runs surpluses
Instead of a drain on the economy it is a boost when the SS money gets raided and used in the General fund.

In the future SS might be a drain.

9. the chart is just the spending side of it. it doesn't show government revenues
which would include social security taxes that nearly equal the social security spending.

annual spending on social security now exceeds annual revenues, although the social security administration has a huge accumulated surplus to last it a very long time.

13. It used to but Obama and the Republicans just put into place a HUGE payroll tax cut.
Now it no longer makes enough to pay it's way and in fact is now going into the red.. Republican wet dream. They have to be Orgasmic over Obama.

14. It's simple, you are correct, it does pay for itself. To say it's a 'big
drain' is, or used to be until recently, a BIG LIE told by Republicans. Now it looks like Democrats are on board with the lie also. So, it's up to us to stop them, but how?

That money belongs to the people.

16. Because that ain't the way it works. The government spends
every cent it collects each year....and then some.

17. From the chart on the WH site SS is 20% of the budget, another 20% for Medicare...
and Medicaid.

Sure appears we need to cut entitlement spending when they consume 40% of the budget.

I do not see the chart for revenue on the WH site, maybe I missed it.

18. kick - according to the WH graph 40% of the budget goes to SS, Medicare and Medicaid...
one quick look at those numbers and there is no doubt we need to cut entitlement spending.

19. That chart is deceptive. Our government hides the true costs of defense by breaking it into sections
If you put all the spending related to the military and homeland security it is more than 700 BILLION. Far more of a threat than SS and Medicade/care, which (mostly) pay for themselves.
