Crime takes a holiday for one day in Naperville

(NAPERVILLE) And to think some people think 13 is an unlucky number.

The city of Naperville had something happen Dec. 13 that hasn’t happened here in years.

Not a single crime was committed. Or, at the very least, not a single crime was reported to police. “There weren’t any,” Naperville police Sgt. Gregg Bell confirmed of the 24-hour period that began at midnight and lasted until 11:59:59 p.m. Monday. And when Bell said “there weren’t any,” that included everything from such felonies as homicide and armed robbery all the way down to such misdemeanor matters as shoplifting and bar fights. Not even a light bulb being filched from a little old lady’s outdoor Christmas display.

“While rain, sleet nor snow deters the mailman, apparently it does have an effect on criminal behavior and activity,” Bell wrote Tuesday in an e-mail to The Naperville Sun. “Hence, no arrests were recorded for Monday,” which proved to be colder than normal, weather-wise.

Bell said he could not recall the last time the city of nearly 150,000 people went crime-free for a full day, although he said it has happened before. A check of articles published and later filed in The Naperville Sun’s library indicated the fortuitous phenomenon has not occurred for at least five years.
