Walker proposes selling state-owned heating plants

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_75759236-363e-11e0-bb98-001cc4c03286.html

A controversial plan to privatize state-owned power plants, a plan that last caused a stir in 2005 before being vetoed by then-Gov. Jim Doyle, has been revived by Gov. Scott Walker in his budget bill.

The provision would give the state Department of Administration the authority to sell the plants or contract for their operation. The proposal calls for net profits from the sale of the plants to be deposited in the budget stabilization fund.

-snip of how this crap was introduced before and lost-

Plale said there is not yet a financial analysis to indicate how much the state might save by privatizing the plants. "This really is just the very first step here," he added.

-----------------------

of course the neo cons want to privatize. it puts a steady stream of money in their pockets.

may the proposal fail again.

1. Why do Democratic states elect these assholes? It troubles me.
We're stuck with a similar mindset in Indiana, but Indiana is traditionally conservative. So, we suffer. But Wisconsin? I hope this is their wake up call.

2. I don't understand
How creating more overhead could possibly result in higher profits unless they are going to jack the prices up by a higher % than the companies contracted would take in overhead.

5. It appears certain that we're getting a privatized turnpike in Ohio.
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 11:25 AM by Doremus
And the taxpayers get to fund a new PRIVATE CORPORATION that takes the place of the Dept. of Development. The only question I have is will the siphoned dollars be more than half a billion or less?

Meanwhile the foamers and mouth-breathers croon about their new governor who's fixing things for them. Yup.

11. Once again, it's classic Shock Doctrine.........
IF you haven't read Naomi Klein's book, I URGE you to take a few days and READ it. What's happening now is described to a TEE in her book. I think that the full title is "The Shock Doctrine- The Rise of Disaster Capitalism."

20. Well, you're preaching to the choir about this being.......
ACTUAL capitalism in all of it's natural splendor. I've said that numerous times. :)

However, Klein's book details the conspiracy to throw off the regulatory shackles of capitalism using crises, manufactured or naturally occuring. That's why it's so compelling IMO. What we're seeing in Wisconsin and the USA is described in the book. I highly recommend it as a primer, if anyone is NOT convinced that capitalism is evil.

Klein's book also will show WHY "regulating" capitalism doesn't do any good over the long term. That Satanic system will use ANY measure of the people's grief to throw off any "regulations" put upon it.

15. He is so myopic. Selling a long term state NEED
for a short term fix in the budget. Then what will he do the year after and the year after that and so on? This will result in the complete selling off of the whole state.

21. Privatizing power plants has little to do with being a "neocon"
A neocon or neo conservative is usually a Republican whose focus is on having a very muscular US foreign policy in the Middle East and Central/SE Asia. They are very pro-Israel, militarists, and have a tendency towards fascism. They also tend towards encroaching on individual freedom, and they think torture is fine as long as it's done by US government agents. The founder of the Neocon Movement is considered Irving Kristol, whose son, Willie, edits the Weekly standard and is also a Fox News talking head. Other famous neocons are Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Bolton, and Rice. The Wall Street Journal, US News and World Report, Fox News, and other major media are neocon controlled. One of their seminal documents is the letter to President Clinton by PNAC. Another is an article in Foreign Affairs by Kristol et al called "Towards a Neo-Reagananite Foreign Policy".

The Democratic party has its left wing side of the neocon spectrum. I haven't figured out what to call them yet - Demonoids would seem to fit. Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are demonoids. President Obama is somewhat under the demonoid spell, this is the reason why he upped the ante in Afghanistan, and is allowing Foggy Bottom to negotiate permanent bases in Iraq. I think Obama is a good guy, but he's definitely aware the demonoids can wreck his re-election bid, so he's playing ball. And this is the reason why we won't see the Pentagon budget touched that much now.

Privatizing power plants is a completely different issue. It involves selling state property to get cash now, and allowing private companies to operate such plants. I don't see why the state has power plants anyway, it's not something states are that good at. They would be better off privatizing the plants after putting them up for bids, and regulating them as is done with other utilities.
