OK Woman Gets 10 Years for Selling $31 of Marijuana
Edited on Sun Feb-20-11 03:38 PM by kpete

TAFT — Because of $31 in marijuana sales, Patricia Marilyn Spottedcrow is now serving 10 years in prison, has been taken away from her four young children and husband, and has ended her work in nursing homes.

Three days before Christmas, Spottedcrow, 25, entered the Eddie Warrior Correctional Center.

“I'm nervous … because it's prison … people I don't know,” she said.

“People said don't get too comfortable here or you'll be here longer. Don't make too many friends. Come and do your time and get out.”

12. Basically. Around 20 years ago a lot of people decided to trade high incarceration for low crime
And so, our crime rate has plummeted while our incarceration rate has soared.

18. has the crime rate really plummeted?
I live near Philly and I don't see that at all. I think it has gone down slightly in the last couple years, since we elected a reasonably competent mayor. (big change from the one before him)

I think people were sold a bill of goods by the prison industry, which is raking it in.

20. Yes. Do you remember the 90s?
The violent crime rate is something like 1/5th what it was in 1992 nationally.

25. You are flat out lying now. Not even close to 1/5. Please provide stats!!! Also.....
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 07:08 PM by KansasVoter
You are crediting it to the Incarceration rate which means countries with lower Incarceration rates should have a higher murder rate.

Your logic needs some work.

14. Warehousing someone at a societal cost of some $500,000 seems about right for
selling a minuscule amount of a mostly beneficial substance in a nation long gone criminally insane. :patriot:

8. Other than violent crimes like rape and murder, prisons should be abolished.
Nothing good comes out of sending someone to prison. If the point is to punish an offender, there are other means, far more effective than warehousing them in tortuous conditions. If our intent is to rehabilitate, again, there are far far more effective ways than warehousing them in tortuous conditions.

9. That's a penalty of about $320,000 to the folks who pay for the prisons
I don't know the number for OK, but here in MI we pay over $32,000/inmate/year. We spend more on prisons than we do on higher education. A real recipe for success.

Gotta wonder what the OK taxpayers think about this infuckingsane sentence.

13. Drug-dealing in front of your kids will get you 10 years. Having yr kid 'make change' for the drug
deal???

10 years is a long time for stupid, I agree. The grandmother involved was charged with the same offenses, and was given a suspended sentence on guilty plea.

15. This will never truly be a free country until these kinds of laws are eliminated for good.
Does anybody in Oklahoma really feel safer by ripping this mother away from her children for 10 years? For selling a plant?

She only took weed into a courtroom where she was appearing as a defendant in a case concerning weed.

24. Pot is still illegal. If you are not prepared to take consequencesfor it, don't do it.
I think it should be legal, but it is not, and everyone who has any in their posession-for any reason-is taking a chance.
