Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 6, Part 2 (World Silence)

Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 6, Part 2 (World Silence)

The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place

Today's threads: Part 1

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

6. The UN's not going to do anything but look out for the interests of the G5
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 06:25 AM by Catherina
I have no faith in them. Not when 3 countries of the G5 (France, Germany, and the UK) are only concerned about their access to oil.

Sarkozi, Berlusconi and Cameron are reprehensible worms. Add to that Sarkozi and Berlusconi's well-documented contempt of their former colonial North African servants.

I feel sick Sabrina. The Libyan people have two choices now, they can tough it out until they push that tyrant and his complicit international accomplices out and reclaim their country to rebuild it their way or be under the tyrannical heel of the UN where Haiti serves as a glowing example of what UN intervention brings.

The only thing I want from the UN is Qaddafi's bank accounts frozen, Qaddafi number 1 on Interpol's list, and no strings humanitarian help

Edit to add
and an immediate no fly zone, the death of the military industrial complexes of the G5 and all in post 17.

72. I am sick too and agree with everything you just said., Catherina.
If the people don't tough it out, they will be killed and tortured anyhow.

I hope they don't suffer the same fate as Haiti, but I know they have no structure for self rule. Otoh, they seem to be smart, informed people and what is to stop them from building a structure themselves with the help of say, Egypt, Tunisia and other Arab nations that surround them?

The last thing they need is more Colonialism, which is what produced Qaddafi in the first place.

I have just come across what to me is a shocking cable from Wikileaks on how the U.S. was discussing giving Qaddafi nuclear power and more weapons. I have not finished researching this yet to see if it was done, but WE the U.S. are complicit in this slaughter and it will not help to deny it anymore. We ARE the bad guys, which is why we stand on the sidelines as the people rise up against our 'business partners' all over the globe.

Gaddafi pops on screen for 15 seconds…

Posted on February 22, 2011 by admin

The much anticipated speech to be given by Gaddafi was over in 15 seconds. He appeared sitting in what looked like an armoured jeep parked in the vicinity of a damaged building, most probably his old house which was bombed in April 1986. He announced that he would’ve liked to spend the evening with the youth in Green Square but that the rain had stopped him from doing that. He also confirmed that he was here, in Tripoli, and that viewers should not believe the stray dogs reporting otherwise (referring to TV stations/news networks).

This is what the BBC wrote in next to their live stream:

...

0008: Almost as soon as Col Gaddafi appeared on the screen he disappeared. State TV now showing partiotic images of marching soldiers and playing Arabic music.
0011: Reuters quotes Col Gaddafi: “I am in Tripoli and not in Venezuela.”

...

0022: Former British Foreign Secretary Lord Owen tells the BBC Col Gaddafi is “unbalanced” and that the situation in Libya now represents a direct threat to world peace.

http://www.libyafeb17.com/?p=1585

Thank you Lord Owen. Finally someone with some sense instead of meek statements about being *concerned* over excessive force as if we were just talking about internal riot police throwing tear gas at protesters.

Qaddafi’s Grip Falters as His Forces Take On Protesters

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and MONA EL-NAGGAR
Published: February 22, 2011

Hundreds of Qaddafi supporters took over the central Green Square in the capital after truckloads of militiamen arrived and opened fire on protesters, scattering them. Residents said they now feared even emerging from their houses.

“It was an obscene amount of gunfire,” said one witness. “They were strafing these people. People were running in every direction.”

<snip>

Two residents said planes had been landing for 10 days ferrying mercenaries from African countries to an air base in Tripoli. The mercenaries had done much of the shooting, which began Sunday night, they said. Some forces were using particularly lethal, hollow-point bullets, they said.

“The shooting is not designed to disperse the protesters,” said one resident, who wanted to be identified only as Waleed, fearing for his security. “It is meant to kill them.”

Immediate International Steps Needed to Stop Atrocities in Libya

Brussels | 22 Feb 2011

With credible reports of concerted deadly attacks against civilians committed by Libyan security forces, including the use of military aircraft to indiscriminately attack demonstrators, the international community must respond immediately.

For members of the world community, many of whom long condoned authoritarian regimes in the Arab world and only fully backed the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings once the outcome had become clear, Libya presents a critical test. So far, the Libyan regime has offered its people no prospect beyond submission, civil war or a blood bath; its actions have condemned it in the eyes of its own people and of the world.

Many have already denounced the violent acts, but actions must now follow words. Crisis Group recommends the following urgent steps:
    Imposing targeted sanctions against Muammar Qaddafi and family members as well as others involved in the repression, including an immediate assets freeze;

    Offering safe haven to Libyan aircraft pilots and other security personnel who refuse to carry out illegal regime orders to attack civilians;

    Cancelling all ongoing contracts and cooperation for the supply of military equipment and training to Libyan security forces;

    Imposing an international embargo to prevent the sale and delivery of any military equipment or support to Libyan security forces while refraining from any commercial sanctions that could harm civilians;

In light of the intensity of the violence and its likely regional effects, the United Nations Security Council should:

    strongly condemn Libya's resort to state violence against civilians and call on the Libyan government and security forces to immediately halt all such attacks and restore access for humanitarian flights to Libyan air space;

    call on member states to take the above-mentioned actions;

    establish an international commission of inquiry into alleged crimes against humanity in Libya since 1 February 2011, tasking it to investigate the conduct of the Libyan government and all its varied security forces, as well as allegations concerning the involvement of foreign mercenaries. The body should provide recommendations on steps to be taken by national and international authorities to ensure accountability for any crime;

    plan the establishment of a no-fly zone under Chapter VII if aircraft attacks against civilians continue.

Individual nations, particularly those with close ties to Libya, and international actors -- such as the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference -- should support these and other similar measures.

Moreover, Libya’s neighbours should open their borders to provide humanitarian aid and safe haven to the wounded and to those fleeing violence.

People throughout the region are claiming their rights. In several countries, their actions have led to relatively peaceful transitions or to renewed dialogue toward reform. Libya's leaders have chosen a different path, with devastating consequences for their citizens. How the international community responds could help determine whether others opt to heed their people's demands or choose to cling to power at a high, and terrifying, cost.

Fayez added that Libyan Foreign Minister Mousa Kosi, who headed the Libyan intelligence three years ago, is leading those security forces. Other brigades are led by al-Motassem, Qadhafi's son, and Mansour Daw, one of the officers close to him.

Security forces were seen distributing Kalashnikov rifles and bullets to the supporters of Qadhafi, according to Fayez.

He also said he has received information that thousands of Africans, from Mali and Niger, have been transported from neighboring Algerian deserts to Tripoli to help in the repression of protests.

Every African who arrives in Tripoli receives US$2000 in cash, Fayez claimed.

SISMEC Crisis Note: Defecting Libyan Air Force Fighters Identified
by Southwest Initiative for the Study of Middle East Conflicts on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 6:14pm

Libyan Air Force Mirage F1ED no.508 "unscheduled landing" in Malta

Multiple news sources reported that a pair of Libyan Air Force jets landed at Malta's main airport in Valletta on Monday morning (02/20/2011), local time. SISMEC has identified the aircraft from serial model numbers (502 and 508) as French-manufactured Dassault Mirage F1ED fighter-bombers from a squadron stationed at the enormous Uqba ibn Nafi airbase (the former Wheelus Air Base under US control from 1943 to 1970), east of Tripoli.

...

From photographs it is also clear that each of the two aircraft was equipped with a pair of what appear to be French Matra rocket pods, each in turn fully loaded each with twenty-four 68mm SNEB rockets. Although the exact target is unknown at this time, a weapons load of 96 rockets with high-explosive or armor-piercing warheads would have caused immense carnage amongst any crowd caught in open or even sheltering in buildings such as mosques.

Eastern Libya appears to be under opposition control
From Ben Wedeman, CNN Correspondent
February 22, 2011 -- Updated 1045 GMT (1845 HKT)

(VIDEO HERE - good video but is in Eastern Libya where things are calmer because anti Qaddifi ppl control it. unfortuantely neocon Wolf Blitzer's entire presence takes away from Ben's brave work)

Editor's note: CNN's Ben Wedeman is the first Western television correspondent to enter and report from Libya during the current crisis.

Eastern Libya (CNN) -- Groups of men in civilian clothing, armed with weapons ranging from shotguns to machine guns, guarded streets in eastern Libya on Monday as opposition leaders appeared to be in firm control of much of the region.

...

One man who identified himself as a resistance leader said he has been meeting with Libyan military commanders in the region, and that a large part of the army has joined the anti-government forces. An ammunition dump was burning in the nearby desert, apparently set afire by retreating government forces.

There appeared to be no single, unifying figure in charge of the revolt. People of all ages and tribal affiliations seemed to be taking part. One man told CNN that when government forces began using live ammunition against the protesters, it turned the whole community against them.

...

i have told CNN that warplanes and helicopters were conducting airstrikes around the capital. Libya's government denies that the aircraft were used against protesters, telling the state news agency that the strikes targeted other ammunition depots in remote areas.

33. Abdallah Mohammed statements

Abdallah Mohammed: We refused to bombard Benghazi, I am saying a prayer to the martyrs of our beloved & free #Libya

Abdallah Mohammed: We received orders via Free Officers, I cannot name them, they told us of orders to bomb Benghazi & asked us our opinions

Abdallah Mohammed: We said 'No, these are our sons & sisters there'. There were armed mercenaries there, but the crowds overpowered them

Abdallah Mohammed: We immediately took off in the planes & we did not carry out the bombing, other pilots told us they did the same.

A message of Solidarity from Anonymous to #Libya
Posted on February 21, 2011 by admin

Dear United Nations:

Anonymous wishes you to act.

We are watching the developments in Libya and are shocked.
Shocked by the images we’ve seen.
Shocked by the things Libya’s Anons have told us.
Shocked by the fact that one man ignores the voices of his citizens and opens fire on them.
Shocked by the fact that even with generals and diplomats deserting, this man is still ignoring the will of his people and unwilling to accept their human rights

People ought not have to fear their leaders; leaders ought to fear their people. In too many places, though, this is currently not the case. A grasping dictator has taken an army to the skies and the streets to shed blood of people whom he should be protecting. Some of them have bravely refused, and thereby done their part; when will the UN do theirs?

We just want the people to be free. Please help us help them. Again, this is not an attack, but rather a bid for your full attention, which ought to be directed towards assisting Libyans in their quest for liberty.

The United Nations has the power to prevent this egregious loss of life, but it must act quickly and decisively to do so, contrary to its usual habits.

We ask not for meetings or referenda. Rather, we demand that you implement the following measures and do so in a manner that will minimize the loss of life among civilians and put an end to the rule of this degenerate tyrant.

    1. Provide a blanket no-fly zone to prevent state controlled aircraft from bombing civilians.
    2. Provide secured transport of medical supplies to major population centers.
    3. Announce the implemention of these measures within 24 hours.
That world which you claim to protect is watching and will respond accordingly.

We are Anonymous
We are Legion.
We do not forget,
We do not forgive.

Expect us.

Audio:

Peace be upon you. I am Hamad Al Targhouni. I would like to ask Al Jazeera to report on the incidents that are sent to it. We would like to inform you that there is a martyr in the city of Rujban, and his name is Osama Al Tabbal, he was killed in cold blood by General Misbah Al Aroussi, who wants to spread strife. He came to Rujban with his brother and the sons of Rashed who are well known in the Kamizda area. They entered the city of Rujban to spread strife, where they encountered a group of youths who were gathered (not for any particular purpose, just to chat) outside the centre where we were at the time. Al Aroussi insulted them and called them dogs and regressive. There was one young man who did not accept such insults and he said to him “who are you, you who describe us as dogs? you are a dog!” Then Aroussi aimed his gun at him from inside his car, and the young man said to him “I do not fear you, nor do I fear your weapon”, and Aroussi shot him with one penetrating shot that went into his stomach and out of his back. Osama Al Tabbal died with the shehada on his lips. All of Rujban, all of Libya, are demanding that this murderer be put on trial, General Misbah Al Aroussi, who has killed a flower, and flower in bloom in Rujban. The people of Rujban and its leadership, are all Osama Al Tabbal, the martyr Osama El Tabbal who must be immortalized, this martyr who refused to be insulted by anyone and called a dog, by a dog like Misbah Al Aroussi…woe betide you Aroussi. Oh God. Peace be upon you.

Not bordering on racist but RACIST, as your policies and politics of hate attest. You're an arms peddling liar who just went to Egypt yesterday with 6 arms UK/US dealers in tow. Your lame words now mean NOTHING.

Cameron says UK prejudiced for believing Muslims cannot manage democracy

Prime minister will tell Kuwait national assembly that Britain was wrong to prop up 'highly controlling regimes' as way of ensuring stability

Nicholas Watt in Kuwait
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 22 February 2011 10.14 GMT

...

Britain has been guilty of a prejudice bordering on racism for believing that Muslims cannot manage democracy, David Cameron will say as he recasts foreign policy in light of protests across the Arab world.

In a speech at the national assembly in Kuwait, the prime minister will abandon decades of so-called "camel corps" diplomacy by saying Britain was wrong to prop up "highly controlling regimes" as a way of ensuring stability.

Cameron – who is facing anger in the UK for placing defence exports at the heart of his long-planned visit to the Gulf – will use the speech to show that Britain is promoting political reform in the region.

...

"So, the argument went, countries like Britain faced a choice between our interests and our values. And to be honest, we should acknowledge that sometimes we have made such calculations in the past."

Not just oil execs, the whole intl elite business community. Thankfully Saif put a real crimp in their plans to hand power to him when he gave the signal for the massacres to start during his TV appearance. Back to the drawing board now to find another puppet and figure out how to get that puppet into power. Expect more alarming silence and weak hand-wringing until they find one.

66. This is disgusting and telling

That some people will take money to gun down children in cold blood...this is depraved beyond an ability to redeem. Like the Dark Ages except it's 2011 and humans ought to have caught a frickin' clue. Yet this is who we are.

And this is Money Trumps It All.

I see Italy's sick connection - all because of Italians' "financial interests" in the area.

Business trumps human life because Business trumps every goddamn thing.

I make a lot of money.

You die.

71. There were rumors that two Italian planes had gone to help
Qaddafi but they were not confirmed. I would think if Berlusconi were to do such a thing, he too should be hauled to the Hague.

Mercenaries should be Internationally outlawed. I agree completely with your assessment.

We have our own here, Blackwater, Caci at al, but the American people have been completely silent on the issue, despite the numerous reports of murder etc.

Our complicit media refuses to call them 'mercenaries' and continues to lie by calling them 'contractors'.

This is privatization. We are headed in the same direction. The Brits hired mercenaries from all over the world also, from the armies of the worst dictators, to send to Iraq, and OUR TAX DOLLARS paid for them. The contract for Britain's mercenaries was a reward for their support for Bush's war on terror.

This country is BADLY in need of reform. We facilitated all the dictators who are currently being revolted against by their abused populations. Hosted them in our WH when they visited like royalty.

America owes the world an apology and then immediate banning of mercenaries and to get out of the countries we are currently occupying.

I am ashamed of this country.
