WI R's still working to tilt elections in their favor, take up voter ID
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 06:37 AM by HereSince1628
(One could headline this "While Dems are away Republicans Play."

Republicans are intent on using their new majority for their own benefit while tweaking the WI 14. Dems have fought voter ID in Wisconsin for years. Obtaining acceptable ID is anticipated to make it more difficult for the poor and the elderly to vote. In the past the R's have argued that voter ID is necessary to assuage their anxiety over the phantom of voter fraud. Voter ID is also likely to undermine same day voter registration.)

Republicans Moving Ahead With Voter ID Bill

MADISON, Wis. -- While Democrats are staying away, Senate Republicans could take up a bill requiring voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Monday that bill was being considered for a vote as the 14 Democrats remain away to avoid having to take up another measure taking away collective bargaining rights for public employees.

A committee vote to advance the voter ID bill for debate in the Senate was scheduled for Tuesday.

Democrats have fought the bill for years, which they argue would make it more difficult for minorities and elderly people to vote.
