New photo of 'English Nessie' hailed as best yet

The photograph, which shows an object with three humps breaching the surface of the lake, is said to be the best evidence yet of what some claim is a monster lurking beneath the depths.
It was taken on a camera phone by Tom Pickles, 24, while kayaking on the lake as part of a team building exercise with his IT company, CapGemini, last Friday.
Mr Pickles said he saw an animal the size of three cars speed past him on the lake and watched it for about 20 seconds.
He said: “It was petrifying and we paddled back to the shore straight away. At first I thought it was a dog and then saw it was much bigger and moving really quickly at about 10mph.

5. If that's the photo "taken while kayaking", then it's tiny
The photographer is looking down on it, and when you're in a kayak, you're almost at water level. That is not 'the size of 3 cars'.

27. The object is well below the line of the horizon
If the object was 'the size of 3 cars', then the tops of those humps would be at least as far above the water as the camera, and they would appear at or above the horizon line. Yet the kayaker claims he was 300m from the shore, and saw the object for 20 seconds or so. So, according to his story, he can only have taken the photo from inside his kayak, but it obviously wasn't.

10. Naw, they do that. Ever watch Top gear?
Still a mixture of imperial and metric over there with road speed in MPH and body weight in stones. But the comment upthread about size is correct. In a kayak your ass is below water level. Your forearms can touch water. If this things was the size of three cars the kayaker would be looking up at the top of it but instead the pix is looking down on the toy.

I hate this Nessie shit.

14. full photo has extra blob on it
which could do with being explained:

http://scienceblogs.com.nyud.net:8080/tetrapodzoology/Bownessie-monster-labelled-shot-Feb-2011.jpg

http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2011/02/bownessie_lake_windermere_monster.php?utm_source=sbhomepage&utm_medium=link&utm_content=channellink

Most websites have used the cropped photo without the blob, but The Sun used the full one (without commenting on it).

Someone who writes books on 'monsters' comments that the photo was not taken from a kayak, and is thus sceptical.

16. Police disturb illegal lake monster fighting gang
CONSTABLES called to a nocturnal disturbance in Windermere found a group of men cheering two battling plesiosaurs, it has emerged.
...
PC Roy Hobbs said: "Lake monster fighting is a growing trend among the criminal underclass who either wager large sums of money on the outcome or simply enjoy the bloodthirsty spectacle of huge saurian beasts ripping chunks out of each other.

"Either way, they go to a considerable amount of trouble as the logistics of capturing and transporting a dinosaur are far from straightforward.

"Usually they will go to a lake or loch and lob in a dead sheep containing an anchor which sticks in the monster's throat. Then they reel it in, like a massive carp, and stick it in a big tank of water on the back of a lorry.

24. Did you see this "dinosaur fish" caught in a Mississippi lake on the 14th?

The fish was caught on Chotard Lake and it measured 8 feet, 5 1/4 inches with a 47.95-inch girth.
