Once upon a time, the Republican Party was very crafty at using the right codewords to get white voters, especially in the South, to vote for them. For Ronald Reagan, it was "Welfare Queen". For others, all they had to do was refer to "New York and Hollywood" to talks when they wanted to raise the specters of gays and Jews. But now even the codewords are being dropped. Tea baggers called African American congressmen "boy" in the halls of Congress. It's ok now to call the President of the United States a "Kenyan", question his citizenship and call him a liar during a Joint Session of Congress. When Obama decided to boast about the positive outcome of the auto bailout, an anchor on CNN asked a guest if he was "surprised by his demeanor" (in other words, "wasn't he uppity?"). When Sarah Palin was governor, she actively courted the anti-semitic Alaska Independence Party. And of course we have Congressman Steve to remind us every day about "crack addicted urban dwellers" and our "urban president". So when you look at Haley Barbour in that context, you have to say that he is actually part of the more polite wing of the Republican/Tea Bag party. As a matter of fact, he might be too polite to appeal to the base of today's GOP.
