MOSUL, Iraq — Provincial authorities in north Iraq called for an inquiry on Wednesday into the death of a detainee who was allegedly tortured while being held by security forces.
Nineveh province governor Atheel al-Nujaifi called for the investigation after announcing a day earlier that Waleed Khalid, arrested earlier this month on suspicion of being involved in insurgent activities, had been tortured by Iraqi soldiers while in detention.
“He was tortured and collapsed, and the army handed him over to the police, who transferred him several times to hospital,” Nujaifi said in a press conference on Tuesday.
