Time for President Obama to pick out a pair of comfortable shoes.
"If American workers are being denied their right to organize when I'm in the White House, I will put on a comfortable pair of shoes and I will walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States."

-- Barack Obama, quoted by Slate, while making a campaign speech in 2007.

81. You surprise me.
Don't you think Obama has better things to do than get embroiled in some local labor dispute?

Won't this distract him from the grand chess game?

Wouldn't this jeopardize his masterful efforts at bipartisanship?

7. After reading the news on the EPA's decision to increase air pollution
I thought your subject was about Obama's retirement.
I think it is time for progressive liberal Democrats to start looking for a candidate for 2012!
The EPA article is in this mornings NYT. Here is a taste:
Responding to a changed political climate and a court-ordered deadline, the Obama administration issued significantly revised new air pollution rules on Wednesday that will make it easier for operators of thousands of industrial boilers and incinerators to meet federal air quality standards.
I am not sure I can embed the whole article.

12. The ease is
based on the cost assessment, but the safeguards are going to make a difference.

Sierra Club: EPA Issues Final Standard to Protect Americans from Boilers’ Toxic Air Pollution

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a final health standard that will limit emissions of mercury, lead, arsenic, acid gases and other toxic pollutants from industrial boilers. This commonsense air toxics safeguard, often called the “Boiler MACT (Maximum Available Control Technology),” will save thousands of lives, and prevent thousands of cases of asthma attacks, heart attacks and hospital visits.

Industrial boilers are on-site power plants at places like universities and industrial facilities like chemical plants, refineries and paper mills. By controlling these plants’ pollution, EPA’s air toxics safeguard will protect Americans from breathing some of the most dangerous and toxic pollutants known to us – arsenic, lead, acid gases and mercury. Even in small amounts, these life-threatening air pollutants are linked to cancer, birth defects, brain damage and even early death. Without this critical protection, millions of tons of air toxics will continue to be released into our air each year.

“Corporate polluters are literally making us sick, and these long overdue protections from EPA will save lives and improve the health of millions of Americans,” said Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club. “Though the announcement today is modest by comparison to the proposals put forth by the EPA last June, we urge Administrator Lisa Jackson to forge ahead to protect our children and families’ health.”

Not content with having weakened important protections like the air toxics safeguard, polluting industries continue to push their agenda to roll back and even block public health protections and clean air standards.

“If the corporate lobbyists succeed in killing these health protections, Americans will pay the price with the lives and health of their family members,” said James Pew, staff attorney at Earthjustice. “Controlling the toxic pollution from industrial boilers will save lives, prevent billions of dollars in unnecessary health care costs, and put thousands of Americans to work.”

NRDC: New EPA Boiler Standards Will Save 6,500 Lives Per Year

EPA: EPA Establishes Clean Air Act Standards for Boilers and Incinerators / Sensible standards provide significant public health benefits while cutting costs from initial proposal by nearly 50 percent

55. No, he just made the rules stricter.
You're being mislead by the spin. The new rules are not as strong as an earlier draft of proposed rules. But they're STRONGER than what we have on the books today. So Obama is REDUCING air pollution, not increasing it.

101. JuniperLea, I disagree.
When the weather is cool, fruits ripen slowly. But in the blazing summer sun and heat, they ripen more quickly.

If the anti-union, anti-progressive heat becomes hot enough and the torch of justice burns bright enough, a candidate who can win will not need long to establish him- or herself in the leadership position. It could be to our advantage that we have a candidate who has not been lied about endlessly by the Republican opposition before we even begin the campaign.

100. Agreed, randr. We need to challenge Obama in 2012.
Hopefully, Obama will graciously cede the ticket to a committed progressive who can fight for what is right for our country.

A primary fight could be ugly and harm our party. In my opinion, it's up to Obama to cede to a true progressive in the interest of the majority of Democrats.

169. you're dreaming.
obama will never cede to a progressive on principle. he might cede if there was an amazing, unheard of groundswell for a progressive candidate challenging and incumbent democrat. maybe.
but dollars to donuts it would come down to the primary vote itself. if he actually loses the primary election, that is not ceding.

and such a progressive challenge is extremely unlikely to happen. if there were to be a challenge it would be more effective coming from a third party.

the question is WHO will challenge obama from the left. who can?

"some" Repukes still think he can't be beat in 2012 it seems he feels no urgency on so many, many issues!

I've tried to "ignore" my disappointment about him, but SOMETHING always seems to pop up again and it's right back in my face! I have a hard time defending what has gone on and IS STILL going on to my family, friends and neighbors... so I find myself avoiding talking politics to others.

A Presidential visit with all the hassle that entails would basically shut the whole thing down. But hey, nice cheap shot.

69. OK, I did
Got this

"More than 50,000 demonstrators poured into the state capital of Madison over the weekend to protest against the plan. If Republicans prevail in Wisconsin, several other states could be inspired to take on the powerful public unions."

And this:

"For the second week, tens of thousands of protesters are flocking to Madison, some sleeping in the capitol building. Fourteen Democratic senators, alternately dubbed the "Fighting 14" and the "Fab 14," acquired their own brand of folk hero status by fleeing the state to ensure the absence of a quorum to vote on Walker's union-busting budget. "

I can find a lot more.

And why Google "living under a rock"?

I'm guessing this is just another fun way to bash Obama because I can't find anything about people being denied their rights to organize. And since all i get is a "facepalm" and a google request I am guessing other people can't find anywhere where people are being denied this right.

70. WTF do you think "union-busting" means?
It's in the very quote from the article that you posted! Part of his bill is to prevent collective bargaining - in other words - the right to organize.

All the OP did was post the President's own words on the subject.

Where is the disconnect here?

71. Hmm. are you being purposefully obtuse?
The protest in Wisconsin is about taking away workers rights to collective bargaining. Yesterday an Indiana Assistant AG was fired for posting on Facebook how he wanted to use deadly force against these "thugs" you know.. teachers. If you think rights aren't being threatened you are asleep.

And this looks like an attempt to get Obama to keep his word not to bash him.

Only analysis I saw talking about this last night was how he's too worried about stepping in right now and pissing off Wisconsin voters in 2012? HUH? WHAT? How about if he would just stand up for what he believes in - but he won't even do that. Obama is more worried about getting re-elected than doing the right thing - and you're right - he's like that more and more these days. He is nothing like the man who worked the campaign trail that's for sure. :(

knr - same as with health care, great speech, but just a few months later the WH was cutting a deal with the same lobbyist who was the subject of an Obama campaign ad.

Candidate Obama ...

"And we are tired of watching as year after year, candidates offer up detailed health care plans with great fanfare and promise only to see them crushed under the weight of Washington politics and drug and insurance lobbying once the campaign is over.

That is not who we are, that is not who we have to be, enough is enough, it time for us to change."

This part is from the 4:55 mark, Newport News speech, late 2008.

A new campaign ad from Democrat Barack Obama... early 2008.
Obama - Billy

Tauzin got a good deal IMO, Medicare and seniors not so much.

From the Obama/Biden HC plan ----

http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/issues/HealthCareFullPlan.pdf

"...Allow Medicare to negotiate for cheaper drug prices. The 2003 Medicare Prescription Drug
Improvement and Modernization Act bans the government from negotiating down the prices of
prescription drugs, even though the Department of Veterans Affairs’ negotiation of prescription drug prices with drug companies has garnered significant savings for taxpayers.32

Barack Obama and Joe Biden will repeal the ban on direct negotiation with drug companies and use the resulting savings, which could be as high as $30 billion (per year),33 to further invest in improving health care coverage and quality."

President Obama ...

Obama's $80 Billion Deal with Pharma Is a Very Bad Deal for Us
By William Greider

http://www.alternet.org/health/141856

"The White House has cut a deal with Big Pharma that smells like the same old rotten politics that candidate Obama regularly denounced.

...In effect, Obama wants to give away one of the principal objectives of strong reform. The details were spelled out in today's New York Times and revealed by Big Pharma's top-dog lobbyist, Billy Tauzin, a former Republican congressman who leads the industry association. Tauzin called it a "rock-solid deal," and the White House did not dispute as much. But that is not the last word..."

"If American workers are being denied their right to organize when I'm in the White House, I will put on a comfortable pair of shoes and I will walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States."

-- Barack Obama, quoted by Slate, while making a campaign speech in 2007.

Do I believe candidate Obama in 2012?

Mr. President, you made a commitment. This is sort of important.

173. I sent the video to the White House
I figured they might want to be reminded of all the promises he's broken so far.
I have no more faith in our political system, I'm done with politicians.
My bud saw one in the mall last week shaking hands and while passing him the
guy stuck out his hand and my bud asked him if he was looking for his payoff.
Then he walked away biting his tongue for what he wanted to say.

"...including a public option to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest - and choose what's best for your family."

He needs to put on his hard toes and kick some republican ass ASAP, if he ever wants another vote from working people in America.

You can't have bipartisanship with political terrorists and corporate nazis.

President Obama has been the complete opposite, which explains why expectations are low that he would pick a confrontation on behalf of the less empowered.
