The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place

Yesterday's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

11. BREAKING: Gaddafi’s speech
BREAKING: Gaddafi’s speech
Posted on February 24, 2011 by admin
Gaddafi spoke over the phone on state tv, here is what the Guardian writes:

“Gaddafi is talking at long last. He starts off in bizarre fashion, accusing protesters of drinking pills that make them commit “animal acts”. He says the protesters have been brainwashed by Osama bin Laden, whose people have been giving protesters these pills.”
    - This was to be the theme of his speech, Gaddafi blamed Al-Qaeda for the unrest in the country. Saying that they are drugging and influencing the people’s children.

    - “Is this Is this a cack-handed appeal to gain western sympathy? If so it’s an odd way of going about things, which will merely confirm Gaddafi’s tenuous grasp on reality.”

    - Gaddafi asks how the people will live without the oil, he asks whether Bin Laden will care for their families. He asks how they are going to buy cars or get married.

    - He asks on the wise and elderly of the tribes to mind their youth and says he tries to give them parental advice.

    - “He now compares himself to the Queen saying he is in a similar position to her. He cannot make rules, only offer advice. He is returning to the “hallucination pills” that young Libyans are supposed to be ingesting. More Queen comparisons. He does not have the authority to impose rules on the people. “I have become more of a symbolic leader”.”

    - He keeps referring to Al Qaeda and Bin Laden, and says that Libyans should take responsibility for their country and their children and that they should “sue” those who are behind this and are providing their children with drugs and weapons.

    - He says he doesn’t know when the violence will end but offers his condolences to the families of the four security force men that were killed.

    - “It was an extraordinary rant, trying to blame bin Laden and jihadists, who he said had given hallucination pills to young Libyans. It will confirm that Gaddafi is totally out of touch if he really believed in what he was saying.”

BREAKING: Witnesses from Az-Zawiya attack this morning
Posted on February 24, 2011 by admin

An eye witness over the phone with Al Jazeera English described the situation in Az-Zawiya today. He said there were around 35 military cars with soldiers and they opened fire at 6 am and continued shooting for 5 hours non stop.

He says they used heavy gun machines, equipment to fight tanks and aircraft usually. They didn’t hold their fire, shooting directly at the people aimed at the head and the chest.

He says they were trying to kill the people. they stopped for 15 minutes and they went around Az-Zawiyah and came back, they wanted the people to go back to the square to execute them.

The witness said more than 100 were killed today and that there are around 400 injured in the hospital, some of them seriously.

Another witness said to the BBC World Service that his brothers had been taking part when government forces attacked: “With machine guns, they came into the square. They started shooting the people who didn’t have any kind of weapon to defend themselves. The soldiers were using Kalashnikovs and rocket propelled grenades. My brother said it really was a bloodbath there.” (via BBC live stream)

Al-Arabiyyah TV fires a courageous professional journalist

"The Saudi-owned Alarabiya satellite news TV channel has sacked a well-know broadcaster for trying to criticise the Gulf kingdom’s policy, a Saudinewspaper reported on Sunday. Hafez Al Mirazi, who had worked in the rival Aljazeera TV news channel, threatened to resign unless Alarabiya allows him to speak about Saudi Arabia during his coverage of Egypt’s protests, the online Arabic language daily 'Alnas' said." In his last appearance on the station of King Fahd's brother-in-law (run by King Fahd's son, `Azzuz), Mirazi mocked the headline of Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat and exclaimed: can Saudi newspaper mock the King of Saudi Arabia? (thanks Bart)

The IMF hearts Arab tyrants

"Less than two weeks ago, the International Monetary Fund’s executive board, its highest authority, assessed a North African country’s economy and commended its government for its “ambitious reform agenda.” The I.M.F. also welcomed its “strong macroeconomic performance and the progress on enhancing the role of the private sector,” and “encouraged” the authorities to continue on that promising path. By unfortunate timing, that country was Libya. The fund’s mission to Tripoli had somehow omitted to check whether the “ambitious” reform agenda was based on any kind of popular support. Libya is not an isolated case. And the I.M.F. doesn’t look good after it gave glowing reviews to many of the countries shaken by popular revolts in recent weeks. Tunisia was hailed last September for its “wide-ranging structural reforms” and “prudent macroeconomic management.” Bahrain was credited in December with a “favorable near-term outlook” after the economy “managed the global crisis well.” Algeria’s “prudent macroeconomic policies” helped it to “build a sound financial position with a very low level of debt.” And in Cairo, the I.M.F. directors last April praised the authorities’ response to the crisis as well as their “sound macroeconomic management.”" (thanks A.)

BAIDA, LIBYA - ...

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Gaddafi's son, disputed the death tolls that have been reported since the protests began 10 days ago, saying allegations that hundreds have been killed are a "joke."

...

The junior Gaddafi said Libya intends to provide Western journalists on Friday access to Tripoli, the capital, and other cities, so they can corroborate the government's claim that the country remains under Gaddafi's control.

The U.S. State Department, citing conversations with Libyan officials, said some members of news organizations CNN, BBC Arabic and al-Arabiya would be allowed into the country, but any reporters who have entered Libya without government permission would be considered al-Qaeda "collaborators."

"The Libyan government said that it was not responsible for the safety of these journalists, who risked immediate arrest on the full range of possible immigration charges," the State Department warning said.
