It was rather shocking last week to learn about South Dakota's "justifiable homicide" bill. The way the proposal had been crafted, it seemed to open the door to making it legal to kill medical professionals who perform abortions. When a national controversy ensued, the bill was shelved indefinitely.
The underlying idea, however, appears to be popping up elsewhere. Take Iowa, for example.
My own comments:
It seems like this could affect more than medical care givers. What if my sister asks me for a ride to her doctor and her boyfriend objects? He could shoot me because I was aiding and abetting, right?
What about a cab driver - same scenario? What about someone who publishes the name and address on my OB/GYN (who will provide abortions to existing patients as part of her care giving) as part of a basic medical review (i.e. on Aetna or Blue Cross's website listing in-network providers).
Seems like it's actually a pretty large segment of the population that could conceivable be at risk of being legally murdered should such a crazy idea become law.
