Dolphins help save tired dog stuck in canal
Source: nbc.com

MARCO ISLAND: Some persistent dolphins are being credited with saving a dog that had run away on Marco Island. The dog's owner said he had been missing for 15 hours before the dolphins alerted neighbors.

Cindy Burnett says her 11-year-old Doberman named Turbo disappeared late Sunday night after his gate was left open.

And that's when Burnett and her sons went looking for him.

"I searched and searched and called his name. I drove through this street at least five or six times," she said.

Late Monday morning, Turbo was finally found.

3. You're welcome
When I was about 7, my cousins and I swam out into the gulf (near Sanibel Island). We went from sand bar, to sand bar, until we were pretty far from shore. You used to be able to swim with dolphins...they would come right up to us. Looking back, I wonder if they were watching out for us. :-)

12. Maybe they were.....
What a wonderful experience you had!
I'm jealous.....the last time I checked, we had no dolphins in Lake Erie!

Swimming with dolphins in the area sounds like pure peace and tranquility. :)

15. Dolphins sometimes try to lift scuba divers toward the surface too
The behavior is believed to be related to the way dolphins will mid-wife for each other -- the newborns will be pushed to the surface for air.

My biology teacher in high school (looked like Valerie Bertanelli and )was dating a biologist from SeaWorld in San Diego. We got the private tour which included a visit with the dolphins. They come up the side of the tank and they want you to push them backward down into the water. Why? The trainers guess is that "it feels good and different." Just cool, highly social creatures.

On the few occasions when I have wound up swimming with dolphins, the dolphins just kind of show up by surprise. The first time was anything but relaxing. Was surfing in southern OC and was riding a wave and about 15' from me are 3 smooth grey fins. I was thinking 'oh here's Flipper and his buddies' I was thinking 'Jaws!' I got out of the water and then from the shore could see that there were a lot of dolphin in the area. That was early in my ocean going days -- since then swam with hammerheads, giant rays, jellyfish, blue sharks and sea lions -- not so much by choice. It's their ocean.

19. Not to be the worlds biggest skeptic, I +1'd it but it does sorta feel like bs to me.
I mean.. How did the media find out about this?
Did Turbo's owner put out a press release that said "although there was only one eyewitness and no video or pictures of it, dolphins alerted Turbo's would-be rescuer?"

Nah. Cute story. Total bullshit.
Gotta love local news.

28. Dolphins are also notorious for gang rape, does that work out better for you?
I think the important takeaway point is that dolphins are just one of the species we have recently (relatively) noticed the abilities of, that rightly leave us questioning the pedestal we have so generously placed ourselves upon.

It's not a bad thing.

24. Dolphins are very intelligent and would certainly sense another creature's distress
and splashing would probably show they were distressed by the dog's predicament. A woman heard the splashing, and was curious, and could help the dog get out of the canal... not so amazing, but interesting that two species helped save another.
Dogs and dophins relating to eachother is not unheard of. One example-
