Poll question: If you were a billionaire, what would you do with your assets ?
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 03:36 PM by steve2470
Curious.

on edit: The "nothing" option, to me, means keeping it "invested" as you already had it BEFORE this poll.

Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 03:32 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Buy a bunch of cheap stripped yacht hulls driven by remote controlled outboard motors. Real cheap, see.
Then pack them full of RDX, C4, Video Surveillance, and hoity-toity looking mannequins holding cocktails.

When Somali pirates come close... BOOM!

Soon the pirates stop attacking everything and my campaign will invest in an old soviet/german U-boat.
I'll name myself Admiral .001 and get a real big hat (and sexy promiscuous cheerleaders).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_class_battleship
"In the 1950s, the W23, an adaptation of the W19 nuclear artillery shell was developed specifically for the 16-inch (406 mm) guns. The shell had an estimated yield of 15 to 20 kilotons of TNT (63,000 to 84,000 GJ),<46> and its introduction made the Iowa-class battleship's 16 in guns the world's largest nuclear artillery,<47> and made these four battleships the only U.S. Navy ships ever to have nuclear shells for naval guns.<47>"

38. Open a factory in a third-world country
Where I would pay the workers US minimum wage, provide clean, green, humane working conditions as well as offer them health care and options to buy into the company. I would have to be a billionaire because I would probably lose money and I'd have to earmark a certain amount for bribes as well as a small army to protect my factory from all the first-world competitors who would resort to violence in order to close me down.

Yeah. I dream a lot.

43. I wouldn't GIVE much away at all
If I was really a brazilianaire, I would start several businesses and hire people to work for them.

Most of them would probably be non-profit (or at least NOT PROFITABLE) but hopefully enough money would flow in that they could run themselves for quite some time.

I think I can do more good by having 10 people working for 10 years for $50K each than giving away $5 million, ya know?

(And as an example, I think it would be worthwhile to set up a permanent Democratic headquarters and liberal clearinghouse in the North State. Get three bright young interns, pay 'em each 30K plus housing, and rent 'em a storefront somewhere in Redding. One intern can do fundraising and handle the money, one intern can do computer stuff, and one intern can do media and roving outreach, or something like that. I think the whole shebang could be run for about $150-$200K a year, and if you got 3,500 people in the North State to pay $5 a month, my theoretical money would not be needed to keep the thing going. This is merely an example.)

45. Depends on how I got the money -
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 03:47 PM by haele
If it was because I was an entrepreneur, I'd -
Live as low-key as appropriate (I'd still need to schmooze, you know - but I don't need to play the lifestyle dick-measuring that goes on at that level)and pump most of it back into my business to ensure:
my product is quality, my customers are happy, and my workforce and community shared in my good fortune.
And, by the way, pay my personal income taxes without grabbing as many un-necessary loopholes that are available - because without the government provided infrastructure my business thrived with, I wouldn't have the billions to live as comfortably as I wanted to.
If I was an investor, I'd, again, live as low-key as appropriate, find a few good charities to regularly donate to (community re-investment, small business and housing seed money, education grants, etc...) and leave most of my fortune to those charities when I pass.
Oh, and pay my fair share of taxes, because I only have the money because I hit the stock market lottery; what I'd pay in taxes helps support the regulatory programs that protect my investments from sharks and con-men with no scruples.
If I inherited the money, I'd act the same way as if I invested to make my billions. Because instead of winning the stock-market lottery, I apparently won the family ties lottery. Either way, I didn't really have to work very hard at it, just take the chance and made a few good picks.

Of course, I'm just a humble and honest working bee - you know - the type of person who pays her own way and takes responsibility for her actions and choices. And my mommy taught me to be fair and share my good fortune.
I'd actually feel guilty knowing that I didn't really have to do jack to get my wealth, especially if screwing others was the primary stepping stone to that wealth.

Haele

Always thought it would be a way for the parents to pull themselves out if they didn't have to worry about the kids or have to feed them etc. through the week.

On edit: Oh yeah - but I'd likely give-up and move to Finland or Sweden. Always wanted to see the Ice Palace. And I could just go to college until the day I die if I wanted to...I love learning new things.

so that my nieces, nephew, great nieces, great nephews and any other family members could all live together and grow old together.

I'd hire part-time nannies so that the parents could have a bit of a break. All of the kids would go to a private, Catholic school.

Everyone would get a car of their choice, within reason.

We'd go on family vacations and all eat together every night in a grand dining room.

I would see no reason to live like an ascetic; indeed, if one wishes to effect real social change, one must, to some extent, move in the same circles as the movers and shakers.

On second thought, with that kind of dough, it would be possible to endow an institution, sort of a progressive version of the Ivy League.
