Wis. Senate GOP Leader's Wife Gets School Layoff Notice
MADISON, WI -- The threatened wave of layoffs of public employees -- which Republican Gov. Scott Walker has said will occur if his budget bill does not pass with its anti-public employee union provisions -- is now hitting home with a top Republican leader. As the Associated Press reports, the wife of state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has now received a preliminary layoff notice.

I hate to see any teacher get this kind of a notice... but this will make dinner at home all kinds of fun.

3. Well that wasn't supposed to happen
It was just the bad teachers who were supposed to get laid off, honey.

Although it is just the "preliminary" notice. If Mrs. Fitzgerald has sufficient seniority, she can probably bump someone younger or newer out of their job and stay employed. One of those "benefits" that came through collective bargaining by her union.

5. Yes, not being dumped for the young and cheap IS a benefit.
Nice of you to stand up for age discrimination.

Am I to suppose that you didn't have a union to fight for you? Sucks, doesn't it?

6. What?
The point of my post is that thanks to union security rules, there is an orderly process for handling reductions in force. That way, employers can't just dump their long-time employees because they have accrued higher pay rates and are entitled to better benefits. Having to re-enter the job market anytime sucks, but having to do it at age 45 or 55 or even older double sucks.

14. great point, and one that needs to be said over and over
With the growth of service sector jobs, the fact that unions "brought you the weekend", (no one get mad at me, it is extremely valid), doesn't really resonate, as most service sector retail jobs require retail hours, evenings and weekends.

Something that really matters is exactly what you said, and something I hadn't really spent much time thinking about. My own husband worked for a big time "blue" company, that had mass layoffs when the stock price dropped to under $8.00 in 2008. The company insisted on calling them layoffs, and the media went right along with it, they actually were outright job eliminations, outsourcing and a way to bring in cheaper workers. The "lay offs" were targeted toward anyone with seniority and, defiantly the over 50's. Talent and performance had nothing to do with it. After the initial shock wore off, and the media quit paying so much attention, the positions were quietly re-filled with temp labor or younger, less well paid people.

This is something that is quite common during downturns, and I think union leadership would be smart to mention this. A lot of people have been there, will be there or have friends, or parents that are there. Everyone needs this type of union protection.

8. All for show. The Fitzgerald Mob will not let one of their own go down.
So, that is four Fitzgeralds that are soaking the taxpayers of Wisconsin. I wonder how many other Fitzgeralds are on the dole, getting entitlements, living high on the hog, or whatever talking point they are using today?

for the impaired :sarcasm:
