Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

I could explode from RAGE! Take a bunch of poor, desperate people from one country to go kill others. God only knows what Qaddafi, the King of King of Africa told them. For the first time, I feel sorry. Almost. Just for a fleeting second. All gone now.

Asked Andy if there's a story to go with that picture.

One Merc was paid with a traveler's check. That should be traceable. All documents such as this should be collected from the captured Mercs and cataloged for later investigations.

13. How Much Does It Cost To Hire an African Mercenary?
Vowing to "fight on to the last drop of my blood," Libyan dictator Col. Muammar Qaddafi has hired foreign mercenaries to quell his country's civilian uprising. Seemingly overnight, French-speaking killers in yellow hats were roving Tripoli's streets , firing from the backs of pickup trucks on unarmed locals. How much does it cost to hire a decent mercenary these days?

Nobody's sure. Some mercenaries have reportedly claimed to be making between $1,000 and $20,000 per day.* Although it's difficult to confirm an exact figure—these guys don't carry union cards—security expert John Pike speculates that Qaddafi promised at least $1,000 to each mercenary for the operation, with an enlistment bonus paid up front. U.S. companies like Blackwater Worldwide—now called Xe—often hire former Navy Seals or Army Rangers for private military work. During the Iraq War, top-level Blackwater operatives could expect salaries upward of $200,000 per year. Soldiers with fewer skills—former grunts from El Salvador, for example—might make one-tenth as much money or less.

Libya demands return of fighter jets
Posted 1 hour 45 minutes ago

Libya has demanded that Malta return two Libyan fighter jets that landed there after their pilots refused to bomb protesters and defected, a Maltese foreign ministry spokesman said.

But Malta has not yet replied, he said, and declined to specify how the request was made.

The two aircraft are under armed guard at the airport in Luqa, he said, adding that the government is considering requests for political asylum by the two pilots, both senior colonels of the Libyan air force.

The pair, who flew French-made Mirage jets, said they defected after receiving orders to bomb protesters in the opposition stronghold of Benghazi, Libya's second biggest city and the epicentre of revolts since February 15.

The island of Malta is the closest European nation to Libya, separated by just 350 kilometres.

Libya: Gaddafi's billions to be seized by Britain
Ministers have identified billions of pounds that Col Muammar Gaddafi and the Libyan regime have deposited in London, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

The funds are expected to be seized within days. The Treasury is understood to have set up a unit to trace Col Gaddafi's assets in Britain, which are thought to include billions of dollars in bank accounts, commercial property and a £10 million mansion in London.

In total, the Libyan regime is said to have around £20 billion in liquid assets, mostly in London. These are expected to be frozen as part of an international effort to force the dictator from power. A Whitehall source said: "The first priority is to get British nationals out of Libya. But then we are ready to move in on Gaddafi's assets, the work is under way. This is definitely on the radar at the highest levels."

...
A diplomatic cable passed to The Daily Telegraph by WikiLeaks earlier this month, disclosed the scale of the Libyan regime’s deposits in foreign bank accounts, primarily in London. Mohamed Layas from the Libyan Investment Authority, which has offices in London, told the US ambassador last year: “We have $32 billion (£19.8 billion) in liquidity.”

There is also growing concern over the impact of the turmoil on oil prices, which yesterday hit their highest level since the crisis began. The price of a litre of fuel in British petrol stations has risen by 3p over the past few days.

Has mustard gas, but apparently none of the more sophisticated weapons.

However, just spreaking the mustard gas on the ground could cause severe burns, etc.

That was all I could catch.... not sure I got it exactly right. I tried.

Translation:

Women chant: There is no god except God, and the martyr is the beloved of God!

Camera man: This is the square of Al Ateeq mosque, and the demonstrators are coming into the square right now, in the city of Darnah. It is an all female congregation, against the oppressors, against those who do not know God, against those who killed our children, they will be killed, they will be made to leave, they will die, by any means, by any media means, by any weapon, by any rock that speaks, they will be made to leave, him and his children, those tyrant infidels. Those who we do not speak about, rather this picture speaks about what we want, and what we do, and what we will do, these women, mothers, aunts, friends, our martyrs, those whose blood will never go in vain, their blood will never depart from us.

Second man: These large numbers are still pouring into the square of Al Ateeq mosque.

Women chant: Here they are, here they are, here are the Libyans!

35. That was truly inspiring, archetypal.
It's like when Miriam led the women in a victory dance by the banks of the Red Sea after the crossing in the Book of Exodus. Legends come back to life again. I have tears in my eyes and can't believe what I'm seeing.

I suppose you could get nit-picky over the fact that the chant leader is a man, but I'm not so inclined. I have never seen an all-female Muslim congregation chanting in public before and didn't believe it was possible. And maybe it wasn't, but it is now.

(I don't know which Arabic characters are causing that wink, sorry I can't fix that)

In English:

We got into the car in our neighborhood area, they have like borders of trash/burnt car there is-while we are driving we had to skid through these road blocks that people put up because they want to protect the neighborhood. They don’t want anyone coming in the night- the roadblocks were put up mainly to block anyone from coming in. So while we are driving there is a whole bunch of them before we can get to the main road. We went through a checkpoint and they just let us through. When they see the whole family they are not suspicious- if they see a bunch of youth men or males in a car- they would stop them and ask questions and for ids, where are you going, etc. but they just let us through. The roads are very empty, normally on today, it’s Thursday there is rush hour traffic, it’s like LA and NY- during rush hour- very deserted, it looks like a ghost town.

We heard that there is protesting coming from Zentan, Bengazi and the five areas of Libya- they are supposed to be coming to Tripoli today, and that there is a big protest tomorrow after Friday prayer. Many people are actually threatened, they don’t want to leave the house; no one is in the street actually working or going back to school. They said today was the first day to start that, but everyone is just worried, sitting at home.

Q. Can you give me more details about who the people are manning the check points?
A. They are armed, some of them are wearing blue G.I Joe outfits or green military outfits, either or. There are no mercenaries in sight- we heard that he (Gaddafi) cleaned up the city he doesn’t want any evidence going on because today during Saif lecture, his son, that tomorrow they are inviting the news broadcasting talent to come and see Tripoli and see how it’s a perfect world and there is nothing going wrong. Although Tajura and Fashloom and different parts of Tripoli- there have been killings, and “bleep” working in the hospital yesterday there was only one injured man who came into the hospital other than that there is no body else.

Q. What explains that?
A. We don’t know. What we heard is that they are cleaning up bodies from the street. People now, families are still looking for their kids, brothers, husbands and they haven’t arrived home and he (Gaddafi) is cleaning up dead bodies from the street. And what we’ve heard, we don’t know if its true yet, is that he burnt them or buried them or took them to an undisclosed area where no one can reach them.

Journalists missing in Libya; one killed in Iraq bombing

New York, February 24, 2011--The Committee to Protect Journalists remains alarmed by the Libyan government's ongoing, threatening rhetoric against the press, as well as the continued violence against journalists--a number of whom have not been heard from since demonstrations began on February 17. In a separate development, an Iraqi journalist was killed and another reporter injured today in a suicide bombing in Anbar province, according to news reports.
In Libya, Saif al-Islam, the son of Muammar Qaddafi, announced during an appearance on the official station, Libyan TV, that the country is accessible to the international press. "Starting today, Libya will be opened to journalists from all over the world," he said, according to Al-Jazeera. However, in the same speech he attacked the Arab media. "The conspiracy doesn't come from Libyans but from your Arab brothers who unleashed on you their broadcasters, poisoned words, and false rumors." He added that "this is a media battle. They misguided the Libyans with media and false information. The information that these stations and channels are broadcasting is a lie," he said, according to Dubai-based satellite channel Al-Arabiya.

The New York Times reported today that three Libyan bloggers tweeted that Libyana, the country's leading cell phone provider, sent residents of Tripoli text messages that said that "a local cleric issued a fatwa against watching television channels 'like Al Jazeera,' that incite bloodshed."

"We are concerned by reports that a number of Libyan journalists have not been heard from for several days," said CPJ Deputy Director Robert Mahoney. "As the authorities in Tripoli invite media to visit the capital they must remember that the international community holds them responsible for the safety of all journalists."
