4. Everytime I drive into Dallas the suburbs have grown
Land that five years ago was just cow pasture is now filled with subdivisions and shopping centers. It really is astounding. The area north of Dallas has been growing for twenty or thirty years--Collin county is the fastest growing county in the US. And now the growth has started going east.

8. No state income tax is a big draw
And also the weather. I think the job market is better here than other places. The administration at my university was very eager to poach faculty from the California layoffs.

10. and ironically, a LOT of people who fled the south during segregation
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 05:09 AM by SoCalDem
are now older , retired (many with pensions), and going back "home" now where prices are lower for housing..

Their leaving the places they fled TO, dilutes the democratic voting blocs, and since they are scattered in their return, there are not enough of them going to any one state to affect the voting power of dems, but their numbers add to the republican power base, since they will carefully redistrict to make sure republicans retain power

7. Some of the growth is due to growth in Hispanic community
Some of the Texas growth is due to the growh in the Hispanic community. If the hispanic community voted in the same percentages as California, Texas would be a swing state.

Luckily, the DOJ will have to approve any redistricting in Texas. The growth in the Hispanic community will have to reflected in any such redistricting.

11. My son Sam
and his wife Jana moved to San Antonio a few years back. Sam was raised in San Jose California and Jana in North Carolina. They have bought a new home, are raising a family of two girls, and are very happy with their life in Texas.

15. Hold your horses on the doom and gloom there, Omar
Consider that the influx may dilute the "native" GOP population.

It remains to be seen what impact, if any, the shift will have on the makeup of Congress.

16. What "remains to be seen" is only how large their gains will be
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 06:51 PM by FBaggins
not whether there will be any.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean NET gains, as we could easily have a strong year... but the reapportionment shift will certainly gain them several seats that they would otherwise not hold and redistricting will bring several more.

Consider that the influx may dilute the "native" GOP population.

Note that these are not new voters moving to the area... they were already there for the last election. The population shift is over the last decade and has already occured. There were, for instance, an average of 700,000 people in each congressional district. Nine of them now have over 900,000 - all of them were won by a republican in Nov.
