A final vote is likely on Wednesday

Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, endorsed the accord that would cap nuclear warheads for both countries and resume on-site weapons inspections. The accord will leave the United States "with enough nuclear warheads to blow any attacker to kingdom come," Alexander said on the Senate floor, adding, "I'm convinced that Americans are safer and more secure with the New START treaty that without it."

Alexander's announcement accelerated momentum for the treaty that the United States considers a centerpiece in resetting the relationship between the former Cold War foes.

Four other Republican senators - Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Bob Corker of Tennessee and Robert Bennett of Utah - said they would back the pact that under the Constitution requires two-thirds of those voting in the Senate to ratify.

Democrats had at least 10 Republican votes for the treaty, overcoming the fierce opposition of the Senate's top two GOP leaders - Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Jon Kyl of Arizona, the Republican point man on the pact.

8. The Repukes want it.
Can you imagine the reaction if there was a dirty bomb in the USA with material sourced from Russia?

11. GOP senators up in 2012 face primary threats because of START support
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/134621-gop-senators-up-in-12-ready-to-back-start-treaty

Several Republican senators up for reelection in 2012 are being threatened with primary challenges because of their support for the new START Treaty. At least one group, the National Republican Trust PAC, has vowed to make the START Treaty its No. 1 2012 issue.

As The Hill's Alexander Bolton reports, Senate Democrats are confident they have the votes of at least nine Republican senators — the number they need to get the treaty passed in the Senate. That vote could happen as early as Tuesday. Among those nine are likely to be four Republicans who face reelection in 2012 — a handful who are already in the electoral crosshairs of Tea Party activists.

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) announced his support for the treaty on Monday. Brown, who is running for a full six-year term in 2012, has already been talked about as a Tea Party target, given his centrism on a handful of key Senate votes.

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), who has helped lead the charge for the treaty in the Senate, also faces a potential threat from the right because of his support of START, the DREAM Act and his vote in favor of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
