California high-speed rail doubles size, says hello to Bakersfield
In a unanimously vote on Monday, officials decided to nearly double in length the first segment of California’s planned high-speed rail line to curb concern that the initial route would not reach major population centers in the Central Valley, reports The Signal. At an additional cost of $616 million in federal funding, the rail segment will now be extended to Bakersfield.

Earlier this month, after Ohio and Wisconsin decided not to go forth with their rail projects, $1.2 billion in high-speed rail funding was re-allocated to CA and 11 other states . This announcement comes a week after the proposal to build the first 65 miles of an 800-mile-long, high-speed rail line through California’s agricultural core.

1. California: Be sure to send thank-you cards
Ohio and Wisconsin helped make it possible. And with any luck, California's system can join up with Oregon and Washington. Portland to San Francisco in six or seven hours! Fuck yeah.

4. The story yesterday about Spain's extension... speed = 200+ MPH
so PDX to SFO, 600 miles, about 3 hours + stops. Wouldn't that be great?

25. Portland to Oakland until
Marin Co signs off on either rails on the Golden Gate Bridge or a tunnel under the gate. in any event the added funding is excellent news for our state.

23. While we needed the jobs...
talking to my neighbors, who would benefit from a rail line with increased commerce and more stable property values, they still couldn't see the benefit because they couldn't see themselves riding it.

I suppose we're not "there" yet. I know California's been demanding this for years and it'll be put to better use there.

BTW, I used to live in PV - right next to the old Marineland :)

24. Well, maybe you're right...maybe you're not ready for this yet.
We have been pushing for it for a long time now...

I still feel badly because I can see what Kasich is going to do to Ohio...

Marineland? How cool! We used to go up there all the time to see the shows...Ah, it's been gone many, many years now.

:hi:

3. Yeah, thanks a lot, Scott Walker!
We didn't need those 5,500 jobs here in Wisconsin, anyways (And I'm not including the 150 or so people that train manufacturer Talgo was going to employ in a factory/repair shop in Milwaukee.)

13. My friend lives blocks from the Merced station
In this coming decade, she will be able to walk to the Merced station and be at Union Station downtown LA in a few hours, walk down the corridor to the light rail EXPO line and be at the beach in Santa Monica--all in the same afternoon. Keep voting blue CA! Keep voting blue!
