Rep. Holt: Sen. McCain Objected To My Military Suicide Prevention Bill

First Posted: 12-21-10 04:45 PM | Updated: 12-21-10 04:46 PM

WASHINGTON — In 2008, a young sergeant named Coleman S. Bean took his life. After completing his first tour of duty in Iraq, he had come home and been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, he was deployed to Iraq a second time. Bean had sought treatment for PTSD but as a member of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), he found fewer resources available to him than to veterans and active-duty members.

In May, Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) introduced legislation named after the late soldier meant to provide more resources for suicide prevention to Reserve members. It was initially supposed to be part of the National Defense Authorization Act but has been stripped from the final version, and Holt is pointing the finger at the lead Republican negotiator on the Senate legislation, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

"Twice now, the Senate has stripped this legislation from our defense bill," Holt told The Huffington Post Tuesday. "It's hard to understand why. I know for a fact, because he told me, that Sen. McCain doesn't support it. Whether he's the only one, I don't know. But there was no effort to try to improve the language or negotiate changes; it was just rejected, and I think that is not only bad policy, but it's cruel. It's cruel to the families that are struggling with catastrophic mental health problems."

"He (McCain) said having these counselors check in with the Reservists every few months this way overreaching," continued Holt, relaying a phone conversation he had had with the senator. "I asked him in what sense it was overreaching. Surely he didn't think there wasn't a problem, did he? I must say I don't understand it."

4. I hate to say it but I get it, where McCain is coming from
It is part of military culture. BUCK UP SOLDIER!

He is reflecting that culture, where only sissy's ask for help.

And it is a serous problem in the military and among the retired community.

5. As a human, McCain in in psychiatric shambles. He's probably
doing the best he can with what he still has. He has most definitely "stayed too long at the party".
Senator, save yourself further humiliation, retire at the end of this term , if not sooner.

6. I don't agree. McCain's problems are not psychiatric, unless you consider

being spoiled a psychiatric disorder. McCain has spent his entire life believing he was entitled to everything he ever achieved. When the 2008 election upset the applecart he reverted to his tried and true defense, i.e. being the nastiest piece of work this side of the Atlantic. Johnny is just in the middle of his latest temper tantrum, made worse by the fact that fighting the losing battle against DADT has just made him uglier and nastier.

"narcissistic personality disorder", a psychiatric disorder listed in the DSM IV.

9. McCain's soul has long since left his body- he's shell and history will forget him

he's working on making sure of it - his footnote to history will be:

McCain, John (Republican) - soundly lost two Presidential runs, released Palin Plague upon America, failed as a human being.'

I even saw his soul listed on Craigslist by someone named Mr S. Atan of Hellsburro Valley

no one was buying it - all used up

12. Sure thing, John! Whaddya want?
John Sidney McCain III, old Senator Straight Talk hisself, is looking at all the nice goodies being doled out to recalcitrant members of his party, and in the best tradition of the GOP is here with his hand out and the eternal question, "Where's mine?"

Lucky for him, we're in our dealin'est days ever here at Honest Obama's Swap and Shop! Sure, there are all kinds of no-brainer bills that should sail through with nary a dissenting vote, and in times past, we'd have probably shamed the speed bumps into getting out of the way to do what's right, whether it's ending a stupid half-measure military policy that outlived its usefulness more than a decade ago or ratifying a treaty that's been sitting around for eight months. But McCain's no dope: He's seen his colleagues get stroked from here to St. Swithins' Day, and it's John's turn in the barrel. Time to pony up for the senior senator from Arizona before we coddle a bunch of crybabies. Oh, and John would like his military disability check to just go directly to Neiman-Marcus this month.
