A secret plan to lift the spirits of a military family unfolded perfectly Thursday at a Millard elementary school.
Shannon Schiermeyer, 31, and her children Logan, 8, and Kylynn, 7, sat down with other students in the Bryan Elementary gymnasium for an assembly featuring a special guest reader.
The family was surprised and delighted when the reader turned out to be Sgt. 1st Class Jason Schiermeyer, 34, on a recording mailed from 7,000 miles away in Afghanistan.
Communication has been spotty at best between Shannon Schiermeyer and her husband, who shipped out two months ago to Afghanistan and is stationed in Bagram.
The family doesn’t have an Internet video connection, phone service has been unreliable and the 10.5-hour time difference has hampered contact.
He’s been deployed before, but this is the first time where the children are old enough to realize he’s gone.
