So, whatever happened with all that TSA outrage?
Did the scanning and groping stop?

Did Americans give in to further invasions of their privacy (again)?

Or did the media just decide it was no longer a marketable story?

Just wondering, as another big travel weekend is upon us and I haven't heard much about this issue.

On a related note, this from an interesting new article about America's relationship with privacy, and why 99% of travelers are opting-in for the full body scans.

So, yes, the vast majority of us will continue to go through the full-body scanners. We will do it most of all because we hope the new technology makes us safer, but also because we're in a rush, because we don't want to make a fuss, because we don't want to find out just how "enhanced" a pat-down can be, because we don't even know what a full-body scanner is. We will do it because we've been inured to giving up things when we go to the airport, and it stinks, sure, but this is the price of flying in a scary age. We will do it because thinkingly or unthinkingly we have concluded this is a good bargain.

1. It's still there
Whether the media decides to report it or not, millions more Americans are now clued in to the fact that the government is NOT your friend, no matter who is nominally in control of it.

2. When you have no choice what will you do other than not fly
we are now conditioned to react to fearmongering by giving up our rights. Awesome right. :(

3. The media briefly forgot we're not permitted to be outraged at the means of control. Things are back
to normal and the scanning and groping are AOK with us all. Now what about those teacher unions destroying the education of our children!!!!

4. I've flown 3 times since it started, haven't noticed any outrage
I haven't been asked to go through the scanners, but they're there. They're being used. I haven't seen anyone opt out or put up a fuss about it.

7. Another issue may be our tendency to protest from our sofas.
And to think this is the country that once inspired the world to revolt for democracy.

8. I went through a scanner about 10 days ago
One thing that helps increase compliance is that they never really say what they're doing. "Step inside..." they don't tell you this is an x-ray backscatter machine.

What I found most annoying was actually the incompetence of the TSA. I walked in, stepped on the footprints. The operator started the scan then began cracking up - she'd forgotten to ask my to hold my arms above my head. So she did it again. I'm sure it's a mind-numbingly dull job, but there's also only so much that you need to actually get right...

14. Do they at least have the potential risks posted somewhere?
So that people can make an informed decision?

21. I presume people are opting in for body scans
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 08:35 PM by LisaL
because TSA assured us the body scans are harmless. How does TSA know that body scans are harmless? I for one would like to know that before I get into one of those devices.
"We found that essentially none of this information was known or made public, and more interestingly, it looked like this technology had not been independently vetted by the scientific community, published, peer-reviewed or even discussed openly," Sedat said. "Essentially, all the information was coming from companies that were making the devices, and it looked like it was being parroted by the FDA and the TSA, which didn't seem reasonable."

When I have to fly overseas in the late Spring I am driving up to Canada to fly out of a Canadian airport. I will not bow down to the American Taliban government.

24. Some of our airports apparently have them too
although I haven't heard of any junk feeling body searches. Be sure to check it before you decide where to fly out of though.
