54. This guy epitomizes why I never went on for the PhD.
Three post docs is the norm, and even if you do land a job, you have to practically kill yourself in order to get tenure. When I was a Masters student, we had a PhD student who was the best of the best. I saw what it took for HIM to get post docs and eventually a permanent job. Thanks, but no thanks. Don't like teaching anyway.

12. Just calling it as I see it. Sorry. Furthermore, most postdocs are working on someone else's idea,
not their own. Three successive postdocs suggests the possibility a lack of independent thinking - not a desirable trait in the academic world.

16. Not the conclusion I would draw. Just that he is not using his talents effectively - or that he has
been getting really lousy advice - or that he is in a deep state of denial about his opportunities and refuses to consider opportunities which are "beneath him" - perhaps all three - or maybe this is basically a "stunt" - which is what I really suspect.

41. So according to you an "elitist" is someone offering an observation on academic standards.
I plead "guilty" then. I would just point out that I don't make the rules. I am the messenger here. I do believe that everything I said is absolutely true about academic standards based on my personal experience serving on appointment and tenure committees for the past 16 years. If that makes me an "elitist", so be it.

15. Maybe he could outsource himself overseas. India has one of the world's worst
traffic situations ever (learned about it on tv). Car jams in face-offs by angry stubborn drivers; lax, anything-goes traffic laws; fatalities every 4 minutes...

This doctor could find lots of work in India's emergency rooms; wouldn't know about the pay, though.

This third-world country with a third-world mentality is getting a big chunk of our jobs. I wonder how many of those workers didn't show up at those American companies due to having been in a traffic accident. And if there's another lesson to be learned from Bhopal, it's that workers in India are careless & third-rate.

26. Bullshit.....My friend is a lawyer that specializes in tax law
His company specialized in the tax implications of mergers and acquisitions between businesses. He went to a top flight college and law school.

He's been out of work for almost 2 years now since the economic downturn because there haven't been a whole lot of mergers and acquisitions between businesses in this economic downturn.

Many highly skilled professions have been hit hard by the great recession.

32. It's not that no individual is out of work
There's still the 5% - but look at the statistics:

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t04.htm

Still, that's hard to believe, for a lawyer in that field, to ever be unemployed. And a lawyer could always do another area of the law or work for himself.

27. Yea ... I want more info ....
I have a Masters and a PhD, and in addition to being able to use those credentials to claim that I am an "expert" in my field, what I tend to tell people is that those degrees tell you that I am dedicated, and that I can learn absolutely anything.

You can not get those degrees without the ability to do serious and extended research on a complex problem spaces, understand those, and then be able to describe the space effectively to those who know nothing about it.

You generally have to be able to speak to groups of 5-10 people, and often to larger groups, and take direct questions, engage debate, and win.

The line that catches my eye ... "6 post docs" ... sounds like a possible instance of "perpetual student syndrome". But I could be wrong.

The thing is, his little sign doesn't say, "Led a team of over 250 people" or "Generated 50 million in profit in my last position" ...

There has to be more to this.

How could he be unemployable?

And if he really was published that many times, doesn't that put him at the top of those fields.

If it's that bad, he surely could get something in another country - with all of those qualifications, and he still looks young.

42. I noticed his youthfulness as well ....
I had a Masters and a PhD before I was 25. Which of course means I am Brilliant.

:sarcasm:

He doesn't look much older than that.

I have known some very, very smart people who I would never hire because they were terrible with other people. They were too smart for their own good, if you follow me. They used their degrees as defacto argument killers. I am a PhD, therefore, I must be right.

Like I said, before ... I'd take him seriously if I had some additional info.

43. A post doc is a research appointment, not a degree. They could all be in the same field.
And 6 pubs is not that great over three post doc appointments. Two a year is minimum at best for someone with a split teaching/research appointment in many university departments. Three post docs could be as long as 6 years or more of 100% research in established programs where publications are churned out rapidly - a post doc usually means someone else has secured a large grant and has a well equipped lab, research technicians, and graduate students. The post doc researcher should be able to turn out 3-4 pubs per year without breaking a sweat. Multiple post docs is sometimes a red flag for academic departments when they are hiring - it can mean a researcher who cannot focus on one area and make it his own - a must to be successful in academics.
