"Employers start firing employees who test positive for certain prescription drugs"
Companies across the United States have started including some prescription drugs in random employee drug tests, and firing workers who test positive.

For example, Sue Bates lost her job of 22 years as an assembly line worker at Dura Automotive Systems after she tested positive for hyrdrocodone, a drug she had been legally prescribed.

Dura and other employers claim that many medications may hamper a worker's job performance and even affect job safety. Yet many workers' advocates object to such summary punishment for taking legal medication.

---

Indeed, many of the workers fired for taking pain medications had been prescribed those drugs after they were injured on the job. Some of those workers allege that their employers used the drug tests as a pretext to fire them and thereby avoid paying their insurance premiums.

6. Logical progression - first was removing from insurance coverage
any and all drugs that were actually being used by employees. It happened to my spouse several years in a row, to the point where anyone with chronic pain and/or depression could expect to have to pay for their medication themselves.

I'm appalled, but not shocked.

8. I've been prescribed hydrocodone while waiting for dental work.
So theoretically I could be fired because I need a root canal?!

10. So does the same thing apply to the CEO of these companies?
How much do you wanna bet there's a double standard. What next? Get fired for going to the bathroom when its not your break time?

12. Welcome to the United States of Insurance.......
anything that raises a company's liability scheme will result in this type of reaction. How long until a positive Acetaminophen result is a dismissable offense due to potential liver damage.

15. Cant talk about Tylenol causing liver damage. They have been covering that up for YEARS! ....
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 05:03 AM by right2bfree
which is why we use Advil, not Tylenol, in this place, besides the fact that
Tylenol is not really very good at killing _serious_ pain in the first place.

16. Ibuprofen (Advil) is very good at killing your kidneys when taken chronically
All NSAIDs are nephrotoxic and should not be taken for more than three days in a row; those with any kidney disease should not take them at all.

18. This is getting ridiculous & obscene--though I've been worrying about
when I get a job offer, take their piss test, test positive for legally prescribed vicodan (from previous work injury) then have the offer yanked.
