GRAND RAPIDS -- As a veteran of the Iraq War, U.S. Army Spc. Chris Weemhoff has no qualms about lifting the ban on service by openly gay and lesbians troops.
“I think it’s good,“ he said shortly after Wednesday’s signing by President Barack Obama of the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy.
“Anyone who is willing to put their life on the line in a time of war should not to have to lie. I think it’s great,” said Weemhoff, 31, of the Wyoming-based Michigan Army National Guard 63rd Brigade.
Weemhoff dismissed the fears of some that the change would erode unit cohesion.
“I have been in combat. I’ve been in an environment where you are in high-stress situations. Someone’s sexuality does not have an effect in those situations.”
Major Tim Densham of the 63rd Brigade said the military will do as asked.
“Our role is to do what the president tells us to do. We are just going to follow the rules.”
