Drug trafficker hanged in Iran

TEHRAN — A convicted drug trafficker has been hanged in Iran's northern city of Sari, the city's prosecutor was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency on Saturday.

"This person was hanged early on Saturday morning after being convicted of keeping, carrying and selling the narcotic drug 'crack'," Sari prosecutor Assadollah Jafari said without elaborating.

The hanging in the capital of Mazandran province brings the number of executions in Iran to at least 163 so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009.

Along with China, Saudi Arabia and the United States, Iran executes one of the highest numbers of people each year.

The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all crimes punishable by death in Iran.

And of course there are different levels of barbarity.

Idi Amin Dada was a more a more barbarous ruler than, say, Mobutu Sese Seko... Adolf Hitler was a more barbarous ruler than, say, Francisco Franco...

The monster in Connecticut who raped and then set on fire the mother and daughter and left the father for dead is more barbaric than the kid who robs a 7-11, panics and shoots the manager...

Nothing in my statements should be taken as an endorsement of the death penalty because I oppose it. However, that doesn't mean I am incapable of seeing evil in all its gradients...

The law makes that distinction every day...

8. Why do they refer to crack as a 'narcotic'? Rophenol? Now there's a narcotic.

Crack? Coke? Meth? Not narcotics - in fact they are anti-narcotics. This bugs me a little.
